Default DEU: Computer Games As Addictive As Marijuana: Study

Computer Games As Addictive As Marijuana: Study
Simon Kearney | Navhind Times | 11/21/2005

DPA , Berlin, Nov 20: Computer games can be as addictive as alcohol or marijuana addiction, says a new study by Charite Hospital here.

“Excessive computer gaming probably actives the same structures in the brain as physical drugs,” says Ms Sabine Gruesser from the University Clinic’s interdisciplinary addiction research group.

On the other hand, excessive gaming does not appear to lead to aggression, a separate study found.

The first of the two studies compared 15 casual gamers with 15 excessive gamers. Players who met at least three criteria of addiction such as insatiable craving, withdrawal symptoms or neglect of other interests were described as excessive.

The test subjects were shown images of computer games, alcohol bottles and neutral objects.

For the excessive gamers, the computer game scenes set off a much stronger stimulus in the brain than for the other subjects. Their reaction to the other images was weaker.

The research group queried 7,000 gamers about their gaming behaviour, surveying data on aggression and inclination to violence.

Some 12 per cent of those polled demonstrated gaming behaviour that could be defined as addictive. Yet there was no indication that excessive computer gaming made them particularly aggressive.

Some games can be very addictive. I used to play Doom an other first person shooters for hours and then got hooked on Command and Conquer games. The best thing that helped me stop playing the first person shooter games was the cheat codes.

FPS's and RTS's have nothing on MMORPG's, addiction-wise.

Yeah I thought the article was interesting because it emphasizes that addiction is not something that is soley related to drugs. Addiction is all around us.

I used to have a hard addiction to Ultima Online 4 years ago. Since then I have played Shadowbane, World of Warcraft, but have since quit all of them. They are truly addicting, but I would hardly advocate banning them.

I am a recovering CS addict. I still play occasionally but not for four, five, six hours straight like I used to. IMO video games are much more addictive than pot.

So true though. What's funny is on this other message board I'm on, it's basically a bunch of Republicans, kids in their mid-teens to late-twenties, and they're the stereotypical "I always have girl problems, I hate MTV and pop-culture, etc." types and they all love video games. They talk about how they spend hours, even days, playing a game and how they miss class and forget to sleep and talk to friends, etc. Well, what's funny is, they all despise drugs, mainly marijuana because I'm always trying to shed some light over there (to no avail). Anyways, I made this connection one time to them, that them playing video games nonstop is the same as someone addicted to a drug. They fail to see the connection though, and yell "shut up you smelly hippy" like they always do
