| Tell Congress to Support Marijuana Research Now Drug Policy Alliance | 11/30/2005 Time is running out for members of Congress to add their signatures to a letter supporting an end to the government monopoly on marijuana production for research. The final letter will be used in a hearing taking place in December. Though the law requires adequate competition in the manufacture of Schedule I drugs - such as marijuana - to be used for research purposes, current Drug Enforcement Administration restrictions limit production to one government source. This policy stifles research, and marijuana is the only drug for which the federal government has a monopoly over production. Fortunately, the University of Massachusetts-Amherst is challenging the rules with an application to grow research marijuana. An important hearing in the case is scheduled for December 12-16, and the sign-on letter from Congress will be submitted as evidence. In preparation, the letter will be closed to new signatures on Monday, December 5. 35 members of Congress have already signed on, but many are on the fence waiting to hear from constituents before they decide to sign. If you have not already contacted your member of Congress to say that politics should not stand in the way of research, please do so now! (BuzzNote: The link will take you to a page on the Drug Policy Alliance's website from which you can send a free message to your congressperson.)
