Default CAN: New Law Targets Marijuana Grow Operations

New Law Targets Marijuana Grow Operations
Canadian Press | CTV Toronto | 12/14/2005

The Ontario government has passed a new law meant to crack down on indoor marijuana growing operations in the province.

The law allows electricity distributors to cut power to homes where it's suspected residents are trying to grow pot, if they receive a court order to do so.

The law also doubles the maximum fines for tampering with electrical wiring, a common way of disguising the consumption of large quantities of power for a grow op.

In 2002, grow ops were estimated to have cost Ontario nearly $100 million.

The province says that as much as 85 per cent of these losses stem from large amounts of electricity stolen by grow-op operators to run hydroponic equipment.

The province also passed its fall budget bill today as the government tries to finish up paperwork before rising this week until mid-February.

"The law allows electricity distributors to cut power to homes where it's suspected residents are trying to grow pot, if they receive a court order to do so."

What about generators? What about the possibility of some desperate indoor growers with a lot of money bribing people within the electric companies? The risk of cutting power on grow houses increases, the price of pot increases and then so will the violence and corruption. Theres been enough cops being charged for confiscating and trying to sell pot, or even just being paid off. What makes them think no workers within the electric companies will accept a bribe? We read about a lot of growers moving to indoor operations because of the easier searches for outdoor grows. They are just going to move their grows back outside again

It's the governments prohibition of pot that costed Ontario nearly 100 million dollars! If pot were legalized the growers who are in it for profit would close down, there wouldn't be much money for them to make. The price of pot would drop rapidly, the government could have their own warehouses for growing pot, no electricity being stolen.
