I agree that using a generator would be expensive. It would be prohibitively expensive if we were talking about growing tomatoes. If we consider that we're talking about an agricultural product that wholesales for more than $1,000 a pound, that cost becomes much less significant.

This operation was set up to produce 100 pounds every 8 weeks. That's 650 pounds a year, or $650,000 at wholesale minimum. If the generators used 20 gallons of gas a day at $2/gal that would amount to only $14,600 a year. Even if the generators used 100 gallons a day it would still be a highly profitable operation.

Paying the interest on the mortgages of six houses would cost quite a bit more. Beyond that, you would have to have people to occupy that many houses and they would all have to be in on your secret. It would be a security disaster.

Actually, interest-only mortgages are much cheaper than you think. Besides, they don't have to be NICE houses. They can be rehabs or repos, either way you can get them for much less than FMV, and if you get an interest only loan on a house that is half of market value, and the neighborhood itself has cheap housing, you're only looking at $100-$150 per house per month. But, you have an excellent point about the security, that's why I said it'd be hard to make it look like all the houses were being lived in. You wouldn't necessarily have to actually have people living there, but you would have to check the mail, mow the lawns, pay the bills, and have a few cars parked there once in a while -- it would be a mess, admittedly.

I guess a generator wouldn't be such a bad idea after all. Actually, don't they make generators that run on ethanol? That'd be the solution right there, then you wouldn't have to pay for gasoline.

"Electricity laundering", lol

Where could you buy that much ethanol without raising a red flag? Isn't ethanol more expensive per gallon than gasoline and doesn't it produce less energy per unit weight? The advantage of gasoline is that you can buy it by the tankful at any gas station and nobody would notice. If you had a farm you could even put in a tank and a pump and have your fuel delivered by tank truck!

Or are you talking about producing your own ethanol from the biomass of the non-bud parts of the plants? That would be cool. It wouldn't be a perpetual motion machine but it would certainly recover a lot of energy that would otherwise be wasted.

I used to live on a farm in southern Ohio. It was on top of a hill and when they made the cuts with bulldozers to put in the driveway they discovered a vein of coal (this was an old strip-mining area, no longer profitable to mine because of air pollution standards). We heated the house with coal stoves. When we needed fuel we'd go down to the cut with a wheelbarrow, a pick, and a shovel. Now, if we'd had a cave and a coal-fired steam-powered generator... You could also burn all of your after-harvest debris!

Can an admin, or the poster himself edit that phone number out, for obvious reasons?

What are the obvious reasons? I must be dense. If a person wants to give out his phone number why should we object?
