| Rodent Junkies Hit Police Stash David Karsh | NBC2 News Online | 01/13/2006 CHARLOTTE COUNTY— A surprising discovery reveals why cocaine, marijuana and other drugs began disappearing from one local police department's evidence room. Furry intruders found a way into the highly secured area and treated themselves to some dangerous snacks. Robert Estrada has been a North Port Police Officer for more than a decade and has never seen an investigation end like this. Important evidence was simply disappearing. "It was unbelievable. It really was," said Estrada. It took a clue from a blue evidence bin to finally crack the case. "I guess when one of the crime scene officers looked inside, they saw the spillage of marijuana and bite marks. Then they investigated further," said Estrada. (BuzzNote: Who's buying this? )No arrests have been made, but you won't believe the prime suspect. It seems rats penetrated heavy security and partied with all sorts of illegal drugs. (BuzzNote: Wouldn't very small amounts of really toxic drugs simply kill a rat outright?) "It could severely mess up their neurological systems, their brains, the same way it affects humans," said Rita Evans, a pet shop employee. The department has about 40,000 pieces of evidence in one room. Each one is connected to a different case. The thought of rats eating drugs may be kind of funny, but it could lead to serious repercussions once some of the cases go to court." "We take it seriously. We don't want a case to go away because a rat ate it," said Estrada. No one's sure how much dope the rodents gobbled up or what kind of legal impact it will have. The Sarasota County State Attorney has been notified about North Port's rat problem. Investigators are trying to figure out how much evidence has been contaminated. The police department will be moving into brand new, rat-free headquarters next month

| Hmmmmmm.........it could be rats, but then again police officers like drugs too. I'm not saying every officer is going to use, but some do. I have also smoked with police officers in my area. I think it could very well be the cops taking the dope. But rats........a rat could only handle so much because of its size. Seems a little funny to me.... |

| The rats probably chewed at the packages but i doubt they ate it. Like someone else said, the rats would more than likely die from eating cocaine. Maybe one of the cops has a drug addiction and took a little or took some to sell. |

| I know from personal experience that mice will eat marijuana. I had a bag stashed in a wall of a house I was building. When I went to fetch it, I found all the husks from the seeds but no seeds. Some of the bud was eaten. There were mouse droppings in the bag. I, too, suspect that the missing drugs were taken by someone for use or sale, but the rat story is not out-of-line, at least not the marijuana part of it. |
