Suspect trying to make hash blows up Thetford Mines hotel room

THETFORD MINES, Que. (CP) - A 29-year-old man trying to make hashish was one of three people slightly hurt Saturday following an explosion and fire in his hotel room, police said.

The blast at the Bal Moral hotel, in Thetford Mines in south-central Quebec, caused serious damage to the building.

It ripped through the man's room just after 5 a.m. He escaped by jumping out one of the blown-out windows.

A man in the next room was slightly hurt, as was a firefighter, one of about 40 called to put out the fire.

"I didn't have much, but now I have nothing. I have the clothes on my back and my car, which was far enough away," hotel guest Linda Rodrique told the all-news channel LCN.

Another guest, Simon Couture, said a TV set was thrown against him by the force of the blast.

"It's awfully stupid that a young guy who wants to make three or four hundred bucks has to put people in the street like this," he said.

A dozen rooms in the hotel were damaged by the blast, which tore a hole in the roof.

Police later seized drugs and drug-making equipment. The suspect is expected to charged in court on Monday.

Hashish is made by separating cannabis resin from marijuana plants, sometimes using chemicals.

Thetford MInes, once a hub for one of the world's largest asbestos-producing regions, has recently fallen on hard times.

However, I never knew that chemical seperation was a viable means of making hash.

This fellow was doing this in a hotel room. This means he was either a complete idiot or that making hash chemically doesn't produce heavy fumes.

If the latter is true, that means this guy had to really work hard to produce an explosion. And that deserves another and at least one

I bet they were trying to get the alcohol out, and while doing that, one of the douches lit a cigarette. I've heard of dumb people doing that while making oil.

You can extract the resin using a solvent and then evaporate the solvent, producing hash oil. You can vape the hash oil directly or soak it into a solid substrate (like marijuana dust or flour) to make a form of hash.

yea it couldve been done thru butane extraction as well as alcohol extraction either or... using alot of butane in a confined room with no ventilation is kinda stupid, and same with the alcohol extract.. couldve had multiple set ups around the room and some idiot lit a cig or a joint most likely.. and never thought of the common sense consequences.. i too have heard of people making hash or hash oil with butane in their bathrooms and smoking it right after they made it... the result is a door blown off it hinges.. people please think twice about making hash and hash oil if your using alcohol or butane... and know a little about what your doing... i like to make it in my gazeebo its well ventilated and surrounded by trees so the wind is crazy.... but it also said he was a french canadian... (not a real canadian to my opinions since quebec is trying to get seperated from canada and be its own country)

Reminds me of a guy I met. Heard a story about him mowing the lawn one time....he ran out of gas, and was trying to see if the gas can was straight gasloine, or an oil/gas mix. the genius couldn't tell at first, so he lit his lighter and decided to get a closer look.....and was immediately missing his hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, and all facial hair. What a ****ing genius!
