'No Proof' On Corby Brother

QUEENSLAND police admitted yesterday they did not have evidence to support allegations that Schapelle Corby's half-brother was involved in the Bali drug run that put her in jail.

The senior detective who raised the link between Corby and her half-brother James Sioeli Kisina, 18, admitted his claims did not meet the "standard of proof" required to take action against Mr Kisina.

In a sworn affidavit, Detective Sergeant Dean Godfrey made the first official statement by Australian authorities as to their suspicions in relation to the case.

"He (Mr Kisina) is suspected of some involvement in the exportation of cannabis for which his sister has received a 20-year imprisonment sentence," he said.

The affidavit was tendered to Southern Districts Magistrates Court to successfully oppose bail for Mr Kisina following his arrest for allegedly leading a home invasion last Tuesday.

Mr Kisina's lawyer told the court his client had gone to the home in Brisbane's south believing the residents had information that might help free his sister.

Corby's youngest sibling, Mr Kisina was just 16 and with his sister when she was caught at Bali airport in October 2004 carrying 4.1kg of marijuana in a bodyboard bag. Balinese police cleared him of any involvement.

Indonesian prosecutors said Detective Sergeant Godfrey's allegations could warrant reopening Corby's case after her original 20-year jail term was reinstated last week, after earlier being cut to 15 years.

Detective Sergeant Godfrey, who confirmed his statements were the subject of an internal Queensland Police review, said yesterday he formed the basis of his allegations during the current investigation into Mr Kisina.

But he said Mr Kisina -- who is facing eight charges including deprivation of liberty and drug production from the alleged home invasion -- did not make "any admissions" about the drug run that put his sister in jail.

"The information put in that affidavit was accurate regarding information available to me that night," Detective Sergeant Godfrey told The Australian.

"It wasn't to the standard of proof that is required to support a charge regarding that comment (linking Mr Kisina to Corby's crime)."

It is understood Queensland Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson has ordered a review of the allegations.
