I'm not sure if there is anything to this, but it brings up the issue as to why other European nations, and other developed countries can handle the alcohol age to be lower than our own (or perhaps we could handle it, and some of the things I heard from others were blown out of proportion?). Does it not have something to do with our culture and the forbidden fruit stigma we place on intoxicating substances?

Actually, what you've described is known as "The Learning Model of Addiction". As a psychology major, I learned about this theory during Psych 101, and actually wrote a term paper on it. This model states that cultures of substance prohibition actually lead to much more abuse and addiction than cultures in which use of the substance is permitted among adults. Norms develop that define appropriate and inappropriate use of said substance, which are imparted to children at a very young age. For example, the French have no age restriction on alcohol, yet have virtually no problems with binge drinking among teens, like that seen in the US. Children learn that alcohol is ok to drink, but drunkeness is frowned upon. The "forbidden fruit" effect, which leads adolescents here to drink large amounts of ill-gotten alcohol lest they be caught and the booze taken away, is absent. Furthermore, this pattern isn't limited to teens: during Prohibition, alcohol abuse and binge drinking was rampant among adults.

What amazes me (and I included this in my essay) is that this knowledge is WIDELY KNOWN FACT among psychology professionals, so much so that it's included in basic psych textbooks. SO WHY ISN'T IT REFLECTED IN OUR LAWS??? The conclusion I reached was that are laws aren't based on fact and logic, but rather on unquestioned tradition, emotion, and ignorance. (I got an 'A' on the paper, which my professor said was "dangerous". HA!)

Your observation is quite documented. Just thought you might like to know.

Peace.

You shouldn't fall in love with someone for how you want them to be, you do so for how they are now. I wouldn't be attracted to someone who tried to control my life.

Now, if my partner were to say something along the lines of "I really don't like you smoking weed because of (insert good reason here.) I wanted to let you know how I feel and hope you'll consider this." While at the same time realizing it's still my choice. And I would realize that she has the choice to leave me if she doesn't like my lifestyle.

I guess it's just the way Heather states her intention. It appears as though she believes she is completely justified in demanding this of Paul.

Man...where have you been at? Women aren't happy unless they change something about you. In their eyes, you're a piece of clay that they can shape into whatever form they have planned for you. They change you by nagging, whining, crying (thats my favorite) and last but not least...using sex as a weapon (thats my least favorite). And don't forget about the ability to hold a grudge. My wife has a memory like a steel trap. That part about marijuana making you lose your memory is BS. My wife remembers EVERYTHING I've done wrong over our entire relationship and she smokes.

Then there is the ultimate pawn in any divorce: The child.
I read the People article where Paul is defending Heather and her motivations towards money. He may truly believe that now, but after the lawyers get through with the two of them, they probably won't be so friendly and supportive towards one another.
