Default CAN: Tory win has `King of Pot' worrying about his fate

Tory win has `King of Pot' worrying about his fate
DEBRA BLACK | TheStar.com | Jan. 29, 2006

Marc Emery, described as the "King of Pot," knows no fear when it comes to working on behalf of the regulated and licensed sale of marijuana.

But that cause may have gone up in smoke with the election of Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party, whose federal election platform called for mandatory minimum jail time and large fines for serious drug offenders.

"Mr. Harper has promised to bring in mandatory sentencing for people selling and growing marijuana," said Emery, founder of the B.C. Marijuana Party, who sells marijuana seeds from his Vancouver store and over the Internet. He hopes that any such move by Harper would be voted down.

Emery, 47, in Toronto yesterday at a demonstration outside the U.S. consulate, said he is worried about his fate. He faces extradition charges by the U.S. in the B.C. Supreme Court resulting from the sale of marijuana seeds online, which is legal in Canada.

If the court agrees the U.S. has the right to extradite Emery, the case will go to the new Tory justice minister. Emery believes the minister will send him to the U.S., where he has been charged with conspiring to manufacture and distribute marijuana seeds and to engage in money laundering.

"The DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) called me `the number one drug trafficking kingpin in Canada,'" Emery said. If he's convicted, the penalty could be steep. "I'm looking at 30 to 35 years."

He needs to be worried now that conservatives are running Canada. And all you people were worried about Kubby. This guy is getting set up to do some serious time...oh well. By the way...is Kubby still alive?

Why don't you go over to Google news and find out for yourself?

Did Emery get a promotion? Last I heard, he was the "Prince of Pot". (The alliteration sounds better, too.)

The conservative government will have no effect on Marc's case. I don't think changing justice ministers will do anything since he's already destined for the states anyway.

Harper will be pm for about a year while the liberals regroup behind a new leader. Then the liberals will force the vote and that will be the end of the conservatives. Then we can all be happy again with a liberal majority government.

It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right. For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable what then?"

The liberals in this country said the same thing about the first term of GW. Kerry was a real big winner, now wasn't he?

There is a huge difference between American and Canadian politics.

When I refer to the liberal party, it is in name only. The actual liberal party isn't very liberal at all.
