Gosh, prohibition is doing such a good job of stopping it, right?

Please feel free to try to make your argument. It is doubtful that you can name any true negative that isn't directly caused or at least seriously exacerbated by prohibition. We deal with alcoholics because alcohol prohibition caused more problems than it solved. The negatives of prohibition have been adequately and conclusively demonstrated in the past. Repeating the same behavior will do nothing other than produce the same results.

The only positive things you can say about prohibition are that it might deter some people from trying an illegal drug in the first place (because it's illegal), it might keep the prices so artificially high that some people might use an illegal drug only occasionally instead of habitually, and that it clearly expresses social disapproval of the use of the drug.

I would contend that this might have some effect on recreational drug use but not on abuse. Just as gun control laws primarily affect law abiding citizens and are ignored by gun-toting criminals, drug prohibitions primarily affect recreational users (who can take it or leave it) and are ignored by those inclined to be drug abusers.
