Return Label On Pot Package Trips Up Suspect
Gary Klien | Marin Independent Journal | 02/23/2006

When that stash of marijuana absolutely, positively has to be there overnight, it's a good idea to make sure the shipping label is properly affixed.

A Mill Valley man has been arrested by the county narcotics unit on suspicion of shipping a half pound of marijuana through a parcel shipping office in Corte Madera, police said.

The plan went awry because there was no destination label stuck to the package, said Detective Matt Lethin of the Marin County Major Crimes Task Force. The shipping office, following company protocol, opened the package to see if the label was mistakenly sealed within.

"Once they opened it up and saw what was inside, they immediately called law enforcement," Lethin said.

Police are not sure whether the label fell off or the suspect, 48-year-old Steven Coburn, forgot to place it on the package.

In any case, Coburn did place a return label on the parcel, leading police easily to his Homestead Avenue residence - where investigators found another 1.5 pounds of marijuana, Lethin said.

Coburn was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of drug possession for sale. He posted bail and a court date has been set for March 8.

Lethin said Coburn lives directly behind Tamalpais High School, but there is no indication he was involved in sales near the school.

The task force estimated the street value of the marijuana at $10,000. The 1.5 pounds found inside the residence was packaged for sale, police said.

Coburn could not be reached for comment. Police said he has no criminal record.

It was two pounds (.5 + 1.5). That comes to $312.50/oz. Pretty reasonable for dro, especially in Marin County, one of the most expensive places in the country to live.
