Default DC: Radio Station Pulls Medical Marijuana PSA After Complaints

Radio Station Pulls Medical Marijuana PSA After Complaints
Associated Press | Marijuana Policy Project | 02/24/2006

A pair of local radio stations has pulled a set of public service announcements advocating medical marijuana use after receiving complaints from the police chief and others.

A national spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, which produced the announcements, said he finds the stations’ actions shocking.

Scott Freeman, a salesman for Mount Rushmore Broadcasting in Casper, which owns KIQZ-FM and KRAL-AM in Rawlins, said he pulled the PSAs as soon as he learned about them.

A disc jockey at the stations, Jack Morgan, had run the 30-second PSAs.

“I told him it was not the practice of this station to promote that type of thing because it was illegal,” Freeman said.

Freeman said Morgan had run the PSAs without checking with station managers.

“As soon as we were made aware that it was being done, we made the change to have it canceled,” Freeman said.

The station received three PSAs from the Marijuana Policy Project.

“What on earth is broadcasting for, if not to facilitate the exchange of ideas,” Bruce Mirken, director of communications with the Marijuana Policy Project in San Francisco, said Thursday.

Mirken said pulling the spots “suggest that you could never talk about whether laws need to be changed.”

Mirken said the PSA announcements featured comments from medical marijuana advocates, including talk show host Montel Williams.

“These spots have been played thousands of times all over the country, in big markets and small, and this is the first we’ve ever heard of a complaint,” Mirken said.

Rawlins Police Chief Mike Reed was among those who called Freeman to complain about the spots.

“For me, it was disturbing that the local radio station was running advertising that is counter to what the public and our community stand for …,” Reed said.

Cool New Law....

hence forth; all spoken word shall be considered free speech unless we don't agree with it, then we can cut you off...

Welcome to Wyoming!

I guess in some states we have farther to go than other's, ( yeah, a lot farther...)

I guess that radio station didn't have much of a backbone now did they? Free speech.....I think I heard something about that in my American History class. Isn't that one of those freedoms we used to have before 9/11 and the drug war started?
Hey dedbr, is free speech alive and well in the bunker?

How sad, something not being allowed simply because a few people disagreed with it. Actually, they didn't really mention much about the other complaints, just the one from the police chief. Maybe there weren't any other complaints...

I wish instead of this slow decay of society we could just have one of two things happen and just end it:

1. The apocalypse.
2. Everyone gets thier personal freedoms back.

Freedom of speech is not the issue. No governmental body forced the stations to pull the ads. The right to free speech here is the radio station's, not the MPP's.

who get's to pick , the guy who get's to pick, the guy who get's to pick, the guy who get's to pick what I can and can't listen to or read?

This guy sound's so stupid that it's beyond belief that in today's times his remark's would even be printed. Save me from some one who tries to limit my freedom of speech or reading or listening. They are all the same to me.
Why? Because they are all the same thing.

Freedom of speech seem's to be one of the biggest issues today. Ask the people in mainland China about it? Ask them about the internet and the world wide web.

Freedom of speech? Yeah. But now we have something else, and we all want it, freedom to information. The need to know...Ded

As always, freedom of the press means that the guy who owns the "press" is free to "print" whatever he likes.

Great...JUST GREAT!

So now I have to sit in my car and listen to a minute where a couple of [seemingly] fat chicks talk about their HEAVY FLOW; a minute where two people talk back and forth in a Socratic genre dialogue [minus the philosphical ideas]; listen to a wrinkly man with no teeth talk about how with viagra he got an extra degree of erectness; hear that I'm not CANADIAN if I don't buy Molson beer; and then, just when I think they're giving my ears a break from the incessant hollering of useless media advertising by letting me hear about marijuana , they manage to pull the ad before it even finishes [hyperbole]. GREAT, here comes that 'hollering' again. The money spent on the PUBLIC SERVICE announcement is wasted...

This is a sad day for people with AIDS and glaucoma EVERYWHERE!

Amen.

this guy needs to check out the latest surveys on medical marijuana and realize that the public opinion is starting to lean pro-medical mj.
