Default MA: Teen Drug, Alcohol Use Down From Past Generations

Teen Drug, Alcohol Use Down From Past Generations
New Bedford | 03/01/06

Drug and alcohol use are down among teenagers, especially when compared to a generation ago, according the the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.

ONDCP head John Walters said that in a typical classroom of 30 teens, seven are using drugs, 13 are drinking, six smoke cigarettes and 10 are sexually active.

Walters said those numbers are lower than in years past. He also noted that nearly 70 percent of teens questioned said the greatest deterrent to their using marijuana is what they would do if their parents found out.

Sixty-nine percent said upsetting their parents was their greatest fear about smoking pot, and 67 percent said they would worry about losing the respect of others.

Walters said a higher percentage of girls now smoke and there are more girls than boys abusing prescription drugs.

The office also said that each day 3,430 12-to-17-year-olds try marijuana for the first time, 7,500 try alcohol and 3,900 try cigarettes. Also, one in five teenage girls has at least one pregnancy before age 20.

Umm, 7+13+6+10=36. 36 out of 30, hmmm.

Well, the first time I smoked cannabis my motivation was to annoy my parents.

Check the ONDCP website and if you don't find what you're looking for email them with your question.

you are assuming facts not in evidence. I go by the words he used, not by what I may think he may have meant by them.

Have you never heard of lying by speaking the truth in such a way that it causes people to infer something untrue?

Actually, you are the one making assumptions.

Nothing there indicates that each of these groups is mutually exclusive.

Yeah, it's called equivocation. Like, if I tell my parents I'll be home at 11:30 and come home not at 11:30 at night like they were expecting, but 11:30 the next morning.

Walters was implying that out of those 30 kids some of them are doing more than one thing, so the numbers do add up.
