| 37 Knives Seized In Bust Pete Fisher | Toronto Sun | 03/09/2006 PORT HOPE -- A routine drug bust led police to more than three dozen prohibited knives, allegedly scattered throughout a Port Hope home yesterday. Acting on a drug search warrant, officers with the Port Hope Police and the Kawartha Combined Forces Drug Unit seized about 225 grams of marijuana bud, $1,400 in cash and 37 butterfly knives -- a type of folding pocket knife with two handles -- from a Victoria St. residence. "The knives were scattered throughout the house and, as far as we were concerned, they were strategically placed," said OPP Det. Sgt. Dean Steinke. "We were very startled to find as many weapons as we did," he said. Steinke said he was concerned about the number of knives found at the residence. "Those knives are not butter knives; they're not there to help you with your dinner." (BuzzNote: They must be "assault knives". Somebody call the National Cutlery Association! )A 25-year-old man faces numerous charges.

| Butterfly knives are illegal in Canada? I guess that's not that surprising considering their stance on weapons, but I didn't know that. I have a butterfly knife in my bedroom, I love them. In fact, I've always had at least one since I was in high school. Besides looking cool, they're handy sometimes because you only need one hand to open/close them =). In my state, they're illegal to carry but not illegal to own. "They're not there to help you with dinner." LOL -- they're not exactly switchblades either, are they? Box cutters aren't there to help you with dinner either, I wonder if those are illegal in Canada? hehe I bet in this case, it was just a simple case of black market cross-marketing. You know, the "gateway knife" theory, lol. If they're illegal in Canada, they probably had 37 of them because they sold them just like they sold the weed.

You know the world is going to hell in a handbasket when people are arrested for having knives. Death kills alot of people every year too, why don't they just make it illegal?

| I happen to live in Port Hope, and I'd like to say, with first hand experience, that SGT Dean "stick-up-his-arse" Steinke is a horrible exagerator, and at times, to save his own arse, an out-right liar. I've been arrested by him before, for 0.9 grams of marijuana, which, according to him and his his "Drug Unit" was worth an exorbitant amount of, and get this: $35... for 0.9 grams? What is that? Like $11.33 per 0.3g's? At any rate, once my lawyer saw this he laughed his ass off, and once it went to court it was discharged no-questions-asked. I was unhappy to hear from my lawyer that SGT Steinke was not contacted or corrected concerning his error. Exerpt from http://www.phps.on.ca/Press%20Releas.../15Mar2006.htm "Possession for the Purpose of Trafficing The Port Hope Police along with the Kawartha Combined Forces Drug Unit executed a Controlled Drugs and Substance Act search warrant on a Harris Street home in the Municipality of Port Hope. As a result of the search warrant police a pound of marihuana, and small amount of hashish and Canadian currency. Charged with Possession for the purpose of trafficking, Possession and Proceeds of Crime is a 22 year old male and 21 year old female from Port Hope." FACT: Dean Steinke's "pound of marihuana" was actually only five and a half ounces. FACT: In the local newspaper, the seizure is exagerated (one and a half pounds), and in some parts of the article, completely falsified (three arrests, other substances found, mention of dangerous weapons.) I was just wondering, do any of you investigate the arrests and seizures of your local cops? I've been closely following just about every thing the local drug unit does, comparing press releases with newspaper articles, doing online and archival research, and going over information with my lawyer, and I can say with a fair amount of confidence that nearly half, if not more, of what they report in press releases is either exagerated, an out-right lie, or the context of the situation is twisted to support the actions of the police. "The knives were scattered throughout the house and, as far as we were concerned, they were strategically placed," said OPP Det. Sgt. Dean Steinke." That is a perfect example. They weren't just illegal, dangerous knives, they were "strategically placed", as if he were preparing for some kind of war. This completely changes the context of how people will view he kept his knives, and how they view the individual himself. I probably shouldnt say this, but I knew that guy. He's as harmless as a round-sided stick sitting at the bottom of an ocean under four hundred feet of sand. He actually manufactured those knives himself. He was an avid knife-collector. Though, I must say, I especially enjoyed how Dean Steinke left out all the information about his collection of LEGAL knives, numbering in the hundreds. Kind of interesting how cops leave out information like that when they release reports to the public, hmmm? |

| It sounds like just another disgruntled person who got busted for possession and is blaming the police for their arrest...like they didn't have any blame for their irresponsible behavior. You got busted. Too bad...so sad. Stop whining and dry your tears. The cops were just doing their job. |

| Getting caught with marijuana. You and I both know it's illegal. So when or if you get caught with it, you got no one to blame but yourself. You chose to have it in your possession (that universal freedom from another post) so if you're arrested (the consequences of that universal freedom), one could concider your actions irresponsible. ![]() |

| Yeah, it's illegal. What has that got to do with "irresponsible"? There is responsible use and irresponsible use (we encourage responsible use), neither of which have to do with marijuana's illegal status. Civil disobedience (doing what you consider to be proper regardless of its legality) is part of how free people conduct their lives. People who slavishly follow all the rules are not free. They're merely "safe". |
