Default KOR: What Causes Drug Addiction?

What Causes Drug Addiction?
One man turns to marijuana to ease the pain of lost love
Rupa Kharel | OhmyNews | 03/14/2006

After an hour traveling on a bus from my home through a picturesque countryside, I arrived at my destination: Sankhu. I heard that place is famous for marijuana and I wanted to do some research.

Following the directions of the local people, I found a small house doing a big business. I asked the woman about marijuana but she ignored me because I had not been there before.

Coincidently, I met one of my friends, Gopal, who used to come there frequently. I was surprised when I heard that he used to be addicted to marijuana. The same woman ignoring me gave him a packet of marijuana when he asked for one.

He started his tale in answering my question of “why.” Here, I am going to write his painful and heart-breaking story which I heard from his own words on the way back home.

The story starts three years ago when he fell in love with a girl named Rina. His days and nights were painful and insipid. His inner pain was so much that he could not tolerate it alone, but there was no person to give him comfort.

At last, he chose an alternative, which led him to an addiction. He started smoking marijuana. Smoking from early morning until midnight was his routine. He also listened and wrote ghazals (poems). Days, weeks, and months passed without any changes to his daily routine. Only marijuana was the cause of disputes with his family.

He started loosing his health and self-respect. As the days passed, he went deeper and deeper into addiction. For almost two years, he slept very little. Mentally and physically, he was getting worse day by day, due to the pain and loneliness. He forgot how to laugh and even he forgot how to be happy. He used to be disliked by his family, friends, and others. All the negative aspects of addiction glittered in his eyes and behavior.

(BuzzNote: Huh? This is clearly a case of deepening clinical depression and a man's attempt to treat it with the wrong medicine.)

His friends and family tried to take him out of this way but it was hopeless; their entreaties did not mean anything to him. He wasted his days in smoke and nights in tears. However, was it the end of his life? No, he realized that drugs can ultimately lead to death. Then, he started taking medicine for sleep after consulting with his doctor. His mental treatment also began. He was reborn again; slowly his family started supporting him, and he gained his self-respect. He quit smoking. He started living his new life.

Now he is an expert in writing ghazals. The only cause of these things was love, and after that tragedy, he wishes the very best of luck for that girl, who left him alone in the way to hell.

Do I think smoking marijuana is the right choice after being deceived by someone? Of course not. There are so many alternatives in life besides drugs, but why do people choose only the wrong way?

I, and I think most people on this site, would wholeheartedly agree that marijuana shouldn't be a "solution" to anything, unless it's a diagnosed medical condition for which a doctor recommends marijuana. However, that doesn't mean that people who already have their lives under control shouldn't be able to use it as a recreational intoxicant, considering it's less harmful than alcohol, don't you think?
