Secondary literature (such as this) is almost always dumbed down to be understandable by the layman. A quick glance at the abstract shows

"The authors examined neuropsychological functioning in 20 long-term (LT), 20 shorter term (ST) heavy frequent cannabis users, and 24 controls after abstinence for ≥24 hours prior to testing. LT users performed significantly worse on verbal memory and psychomotor speed. LT and ST users had a higher proportion of deficits on verbal fluency, verbal memory, attention, and psychomotor speed. Specific cognitive domains appear to deteriorate with increasing years of heavy frequent cannabis use."

Bolded is what was categorized as "brain fog" by the author of "Long-Term Marijuana Use May Fog the Brain."

Another article: http://www.ukcia.org/research/CognitiveFunctioning.html

The responses to that article (towards the bottom) are interesting as well.

Default 4 joints or more???

I like how they had the catagory of 4 joints OR MORE as heavy users. How do I know that those people arnt smoking a half O a day?? They should make them all the smoke the same amount, and the same stuff. I agree that they should also wait atleast a week or two before they tested.

Also, the subjects should be uninitiated to the use of cannabis and baselined previous to use. A control group supplied some of that NIDA 0% THC grade subjected to the same testing would be nice as well. Trouble is, I think such a study would violate professional ethical standards as you can't intentionally harm subjects in a clinical study.

FWIW, I went through court ordered rehab in the early 90s after having my 'merryjewanna lab' (2 plants under an HID) raided. The stress of having my home invaded by thugs, my property stolen, $25k bond laid while the magistrate called me a 'menace to the community' and then subjected to the humiliation of being labeled a 'merryjewanna addick' didn't leave me in the best state of mind I've enjoyed in my lifetime. At least when a street gang does a home invasion they just take your stuff and leave.

Cognative abilities depend on values. If you're Christian, Genesis tells us that God didn't want us to have knowledge at all what with the whole forbidden fruit idea. Wouldn't it make someone closer to God to have less knowledge or ability to retain knowledge. On a different note, do those tests test the ability for open-mindedness? Who cares if they can remember 15 words in a row or not if they can see how there are multiple cultures, beliefs, ways to live one's life and live in peace and harmony with everyone around them even if some concepts wouldn't make sense to them in millions of years. There should be a test to see if violence is reduced by the consumption of cannabis. How bout we prescribe some herb to anger management candidates?

You know, even if the BS about marijuana causing a little irrepairable cognitive decline were proven to be true, would it really be that bad? I mean, alcohol can cause liver disease, brain damage, and DEATH. So what if pot causes you to lose a little mental sharpness. Would most people's lives suffer all that much from it? I don't think so.

Peace.

BTW, why is a 'joint' of marijuana still used as if it's some kind of standardized metric? I've seen people get 4 joints from a gram, and I've seen joints that weighed over 3 grams. Vexes me about as much as using a 'plant' of cannabis as if it were some kind of measure.

You could if you wanted to! Most of the time the only thing holding people back at trying new things is the fear of failure! But there's no reason you COULDN'T learn it! It's not THAT hard anyway, there are plenty of other subjects that can be equally hard, and some that blow it away. Calculus is considered a first-year math course in most colleges these days, so it's the equivalent of chemistry, physics, etc. Things like organic chemistry are wayyyyy harder.

Actually, God didn't want us to have knowledge of good and evil. Other kinds of knowledge were okay, in fact Adam was naming and categorizing all the animals! (Sounds like a biologist to me). It's just that God wanted us to be ignorant of the difference between good and evil, you know the whole "ignorance is bliss" thing. Damn that snake!
