| Drug use hurts society: Navoka Fiji Times Online | March 19, 2006 THE increase in use of drugs like marijuana, amphetamines, heroin and other substances have harmful effect on society, says Viliame Navoka, chairman of the senate ad hoc select committee on illicit drugs. While presenting the summary of the report on illicit drugs, related violent and sexual crimes in parliament on Friday, Senator Navoka said the committee received more than 400 submissions from the public and other stakeholders during consultations. He said the committee was alarmed at the extent of the widespread cultivation, distribution and use of marijuana, its effect on the society. "Most of the subcommittee members agreed that many violent and sexual crimes can be linked to the effects of marijuana," he said. "Fiji is not alone in this mess and must, therefore, be part of the global effect in dealing with these problems. "Injecting drug abuse is among the major forces driving the HIV/AIDS epidemic and accounts for five per cent of HIV transmission," he said. The report on Illicit Drugs, related violent and sexual crime passed through the committee stage on Friday but was still to be passed by cabinet. | I don't know how it is on Fiji, but I read somewhere that 85% of the people arrested for violent crimes in the US have alcohol in their systems. If you want to reduce violent crime, wouldn't alcohol be the place to begin?

| Ever watched cops? Most the guys they catch have no shirt on and usually have tattoos. Apparently tattoos are causing criminal behavior, and taking shirts off unleash the tattoo's power over the criminal. Tattoos should be illegal, and you should have to have a shirt on at all times. |
