Default AUS: Marijuana Linked To Early Onset Lung Disease

Marijuana Linked To Early Onset Lung Disease
ABC News Australia | 03/25/2006

New research from Melbourne's Alfred Hospital has found that people who smoke marijuana risk lung disease up to 20 years earlier than those who only smoke cigarettes.

A study shows patients report symptoms ranging from breathlessness to chest infection and may develop young disease as early as age 28.

Associate Professor Matthew Naughton says there are several reasons for the early onset, including how the marijuana is smoked.

"Normally with a tobacco you just take a gentle inhalation but when people are smoking marijuana it's often a forced inspiration to the maximum capacity and held in that fashion for 20 to 30 seconds," he said.

"There's no filter and there's no regulation as to the preparation of the leaf that is being smoked, so therefore all sorts of chemicals and even fungi may be in the marijuana, contributing to accelerated infections within the chest."

Doctors say in about 40 per cent of cases, lung disease does not show up in the normal way in marijuana smokers.

They say high resolution CT scans are needed to detect it.

(BuzzNote: I wonder why they don't cite the research so people can find out the methodology and quantified results? These nebulous statements are directly contradicted by this study of 64,000 Kaiser patients in California.)

They've always been against marijuana. What's going on now is that they're looking for more plausible ways to scare people away from it since all the old lies have been thoroughly debunked and just about everyone knows it.

For the old lies, some of the new lies, and the truths that debunk them, look at our Myths section or at NORML's Marijuana Health Mythology page.

Before we get concerned let's ask ourselves a few questions:

Everyone who has had a chest cold (infection), the kind that if left untreated could become bronchitis or pneumonia at least, once since they have smoked marijuana --raise your hands?

How many of you are under the age of 48?

How many of you have smoked pot, ever?

Cigarettes?

Since Pot is not irradiated like cigarettes, Pot may have fungi or bacteria in poorly cured budz that can cause or aggravate a chest infection, which if not properly treated can progres to bronchitis or even bacterial pneumonia -- you know lung disease.

So yes, the chance of kids getting a chest cold (infection) smoking pot is greater than with cigarettes --.

Now with rest, plenty of chicken soup, and the occasssional need for antibiotics, most folks will get over this "lung disease" and if they are careful, will not have it again. Or they will build up an immunity to these particular fungi and bacteria.

Cigarettes however still cause cancer. And no amount of chicken soup cures that.

But this is a "Nice" Reefer Madness piece...

Now tell the nice folks in Oz to have the Wizard go back behind the Curtain where we Can't See Him.

It might be a good idea to put the pipe down if you're suffering from a chest cold or some other lung infection. Put the pot in some baked goods if you NEED to get high.

Or everybody could just start vaporizing. Your stash lasts longer, you get higher, and you don't feel so sluggish while high. Overall, I don't know of many reasons to smoke rather than vape.
