Default CO: Aspen plans to probe pot legalization

Aspen plans to probe pot legalization
JOHN COLSON | Summit Daily News | April 2, 2006

ASPEN - A group lobbying for the legalization of marijuana will hold a three-day series of legal seminars in Aspen in early June. Included with the events surrounding the seminar sessions will be a "Tea Party at Owl Farm," in honor of the late gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, who was a member and patron of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws and a passionate supporter of the organization's work.

The series of seminars, scheduled for June 1-3, will be the first time NORML has brought its legal seminars to Aspen since Thompson's death in February 2005, according to attorney Keith Stroup, who is a founder of the organization and now serves as its legal counsel.

NORML describes itself as "a public-interest lobby that for more than 30 years has provided a voice for those Americans who oppose marijuana prohibition. We represent the interests of the tens of millions of Americans who smoke marijuana responsibly and believe the recreational and medicinal use of marijuana should no longer be a crime."

The public can attend the opening reception for an admission charge of $35, and a benefit party for NORML at the home of attorney Gerry Goldstein for a fee of $75, space permitting, Stroup said.

I would hope that these seminars would influence Aspen residents to sign the SAFER petition to put a marijuana legalization initiative on the Colorado state ballot for the November elections. SAFER's win in Denver was largely a symbolic victory because the City of Denver prosecutes marijuana possession under state laws. This would likely pertain to any other city that legalized possession. Success at the state level in November would be a real milestone.

I've been following the Colorado initiative and they won't have a problem collecting the signatures needed to put the initiative on the state ballot. I looks like they can easily get double the 68,000 signatures needed.

What remains to be seen is how the majority of Colorado voters will vote in November. I can say this, if it passes I'm moving to Denver.

I'll second that. Not because smoking marijuana is so important to me that I'll move halfway across the country just so I can do it legally, but I'd much rather live in a state that supports personal rights than one that doesn't. I'd like to think of it as my way of "voting" for better marijuana laws.

The best way to vote for better marijuana laws is not to move out of your home city and state, but rather it is to call your city and state representatives or write letters telling them your opinion. Join NORML and/or SAFER and get them to focus on your state or your city. Moving to a marijuana friendly city just gets you out of a place where you could potentially do some good towards making Marijuana legal.
