Default AGO: Destroying Cannabis Fields Is No Solution, Says Official

Destroying Cannabis Fields Is No Solution, Says Official
AngolaPress | 04/13/2006

Maputo, Mozambique, 04/13 - Mozambique`s Attorney-General, Joaquim Madeira, on Wednesday rejected suggestions from parliamentary deputies that peasants` fields planted with cannabis should be destroyed.

Madeira was speaking on the second day of a debate on his annual report to the country`s parliament, the Assembly of the Republic.

The deputies expressed concern at drug trafficking, and wanted to know why sterner measures were not taken against the growing of the drug by local farmers.

But Madeira resisted a call to burn down the fields of "soruma" (the Mozambican name for cannabis).

The real solution, he added, was to offer the peasants concerned "alternative crops" - though he did not offer what crops could earn farmers the kind of money they earn from selling cannabis.

They always talk about alternative crops but NEVER give them a viable worthwhile crop. And the DEA wonders why they go back to growing the illegal plants.

What legal crop could possibly bring in as much money as something sold with a "black market bonus"? The very nature of prohibition guarantees that it can't happen.

Right on. The Mozambique guy knows the score. Burn down the cannabis fields, and his economy is destroyed.

That and the fact that Cannabis is one of the hardiest crops around. I agree, Buzzby, it's doomed to be the cash crop as long as prohibition stands.
