Default USA: FDA Turns Deaf Ear to Medical Marijuana Arguments

FDA Turns Deaf Ear to Medical Marijuana Arguments
Associated Press | Daily News Central | April 23, 2006

The US drug regulation agency announced that it does not support the use of marijuana for medical purposes. The Food and Drug Administration said in a statement Thursday that it and other agencies with the Health and Human Services Department had "concluded that no sound scientific studies supported medical use of marijuana for treatment in the United States, and no animal or human data supported the safety or efficacy of marijuana for general medical use."

A number of US states have passed legislation allowing marijuana use for medical purposes, but the FDA said, "These measures are inconsistent with efforts to ensure that medications undergo the rigorous scientific scrutiny of the FDA approval process and are proven safe and effective."

The statement contradicts a 1999 finding from the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academy of Sciences, which reported that "marijuana's active components are potentially effective in treating pain, nausea, the anorexia of AIDS wasting and other symptoms, and should be tested rigorously in clinical trials."

'Isn't a Scientific Statement'

Bruce Mirken, director of communications for the Marijuana Policy Project, said Thursday: "If anybody needed proof that the FDA has become totally politicized, this is it. This isn't a scientific statement; it's a political statement."

Mirken said "a rabid congressional opponent of medical marijuana," Republican Congressman Mark Souder, of Indiana, asked the FDA to make the statement.

Souder, chairman of the House Government Reform subcommittee on drug policy, has said the promotion of medical marijuana "is simply a red herring for the legalization of marijuana for recreational use. Studies have continually rejected the notion that marijuana is suitable for medical use because it adversely impacts concentration and memory, the lungs, motor coordination and the immune system."

FDA 'Should Be Red-Faced'

The FDA statement noted "there is currently sound evidence that smoked marijuana is harmful." It also said, "There are alternative FDA-approved medications in existence for treatment of many of the proposed uses of smoked marijuana."

Mirken responded, "There is abundant evidence that marijuana can help cancer patients, multiple sclerosis patients and AIDS patients. There is no scientific doubt that marijuana relieves nausea, vomiting, certain kinds of pain and other symptoms that don't respond well to conventional drugs, and does it more safely than other drugs.

"For the FDA to ignore all that evidence is embarrassing," Mirken said. "They should be red-faced."

If the FDA was even remotely responsible in the way they do any kind of scientific research if they made any kind of responsible judgement as to what is and is not healthy for the consumption by human beings then not only would alcohol which KILLS Brain cells and causes violence, brutality, rage, and horrible motorvehicle accidents be illegal but how about those little tiny sticks people smoke everyday call ciggarettes

Said product which has been PROVEN to cause cancer.

The ex attourney general John Ashcroft even offered the public statement that ALL tobbacco grown within the continental United States contains the Radioactive chemicles; Radium-225, and Polonium-210 (which is known to cause lung cancer), due to the treatment and fertilization process that tobbacco undergoes.

Not only that but how many other chemicles are in ciggarettes; This is not a new light being spread over an old shadow, or the truth finally starting to come out but a mass audience that is finally starting to pay attention to the politicized motivations and actions that their goverment "for the people by the people" has been taking against them for nearly 80 years,

FEDERAL drug association I have never made any other distinction.

It is happening to reach a pinnacle now that there is a large enough audidence who happens to care of a tough subject.

He forgot the most important "adverse impact", loss of profit and control for big-pharma which is devastaing to his campain contributions. if he cant keep the people scared and legally drugged then what good is he to big-pharma. brittle patients using med-mj watch out, you might get raided, by a big swat team, cause they just know you are really a henious pothead trying to "hook" kids with the "glamorous" lifestyle that is terrible suffring made tollerable with weed.
