MySpace mom claims pot use

HARRISON TOWNSHIP -- The case of a liaison between a 13-year-old girl and an older man that started on MySpace.com took a new twist Friday when authorities said the child's mother posted her own Web profile describing her life of drinking and pot smoking.

Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel said the girl's mother has her own Web site under the name "Tammy Tokes" that is so disturbing that he is asking the state Department of Human Services to investigate.

The mother's posting shows a photo of her drinking a margarita, and bragging about how she gets high on marijuana after her daughter leaves for school.

"We have some serious concerns about this," Hackel said. "I don't know if there have been any actual laws broken, but I think this Web site might be of interest" to the Department of Human Services.

He declined to say what he wants the state to probe. The Department of Human Services is the state agency that investigates reports of suspected child abuse and neglect.

The mother's profile identifies her as a 34-year-old whose "average day consists of a morning tokes after sending my 13 yr old daughter to school. After another grueling day outside in the Michigan weather, i run home to be greeted by at least one of my closest friends and a fresh packed bowl (a reference to smoking marijuana from a pipe)."

She calls herself a "firey, fiesty, fun loving, party girl at heart. I love the simple things in life like long walks on a beach somewhere, and romantic nights."

She also offers more of a look at her life: "After dinner i head off to bed, ALONE. so if you want to know anymore you'll just have to ask." She then gives her e-mail address.

Her daughter also posted a message on her mother's site in January: "hey all you boy better treat my mom right other wise im gunna kick your (expletive) so blah," the girl wrote. "hey mommy welcome to myspace. love your daughter."

A 25-year-old Hammond, Ind., man drove to Harrison Township on Tuesday to pick up the 13-year-old after he met her through her MySpace profile, on which the girl claims to be 18. He was stopped near Jackson after authorities in Michigan issued an Amber Alert for the girl.

The man was released from custody Thursday after prosecutors determined he did not have sex with the girl. If he had engaged in sex, he could have been charged with statutory rape. The fact that the mother makes a reference to her 13-year-old daughter raises questions about whether the Indiana man knew the girl was 13, Hackel said.

"This raises a lot of potential issues," Hackel said. "We are going to look through both computers to see if at any time the girl told (the Indiana man) she was 13 years old. We also want to know what the mother knew about what her daughter was doing."

The girl was placed on a tether and charged Wednesday in Macomb County Juvenile Court with "home truancy," which prosecutors say is similar to running away from home.

Home truancy is considered a "status offense," which is an offense where a crime is not committed, but where behavior of a minor warrants court action.

The girl was released Wednesday to the custody of her mother. She was ordered to remain on a tether until her pretrial hearing, which is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. May 25, and she must refrain from using the Internet.

Making a my space account is just asking for big brother to keep an eye on you......... The fact that this woman smokes pot and drinks is none of anyones f***ing business, but I guess she made it everyones business when she made a myspace account.

I know she doesn't sound like a great mother... but who cares what her vices are?

Theres been a spike in arrests/investigations of marijuana smokers who flaunt their use on myspace. This is a heads up for all of you without common sense.

I would like to point out how Mr. Hunter, who wrote the article, discreetly (though I admit, probably not deliberately) injects his bias into the article with the statement that the woman's profile shows her "bragging about how she gets high on marijuana after her daughter leaves for school". Yet, down a little bit, she says she has "morning tokes" after her daughter leaves.

And anyway, what is the article doing focusing on the fact that she mentions she smokes pot (gasp.) when the real issue is whether a guy had sex with her 13 year old daughter? What does that tell us about the news media today? So a story gets read more if they mention pot in it. Big deal. The issues are the issues, and should not be distorted by a profit motive, which is what one of the larger underlying factors of this lens is. They want a story that's exciting, and they have it in the form of a criminal investigation where a woman just happens to advertise that she smokes pot in the privacy of her own home after her daughter leaves for school. I'm ranting at this point, so I think it is about time that I take a rest. Shutting up in 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... zzzzip.

They are inferring that a mother who defies social norms by smoking pot is also likely to be negligent about monitoring her daughter's activities.


Possession of marijuana is illegal in the privacy of your own home, except in Alaska. The fact that this woman revealed her true identity and admitted to using cannabis in a public forum indicates that she is either not too bright or doesn't think that anyone is paying attention. Child protective services is always concerned about children in a household where parents use illicit drugs.

You know, the Center for Disease Control (at least that is what they claimed) has called my home about 3-4 times over the past couple of months wanting to do a survey of how many children are in the home, whether they have been vaccinated, and I don't know what else.

I don't even tell the joker over the phone doing the stupid survey whether I have underage persons in my home and this "Mother" is advertising that fact over the internet? She is supposed to protect her children, not potentially endanger them.

since the phone company is giving up all our records to the government to conduct terrorist investigations, how long will it be before they make the I.P.'s give up our names and adresses to do the same?

And since they consider illegal drugs to be funding terrorism, wouldn't it be a natural progression for them to consider all herb users to be supporting terrorism, and use that as their justification?

Is that a scary thought or what?

Maybe we shouldn't feel as safe we do, huh?
