| Woman, Dog Find Marijuana Plant On Road Lewis Turner | WLTX-TV | 05/25/2006 (Blythewood)- April Hall's Jack Russell, Jughead, may have ambitions of law enforcement. “He's trying to do his public duty,” Hall said of her dog. That's because the first thing he went to during his walk Wednesday night was a lone marijuana plant growing off Blythewood Road. “It was the only tall thing in the area and when I looked closer, I said hmmmmm.” (BuzzNote: And how did she know what she was looking at? Hmmmmm. )News19 took a piece of the plant to University of South Carolina’s resident botanist John Nelson. And it didn't take him long to tell something different is growing in Blythewood. “Sometimes it just shows up as a single plant or a few little plants that are growing in a ditch. That's why it's sometimes called ditch weed.” He says marijuana occurs naturally, and can grow basically anywhere. (BuzzNote: Mother Nature is on our side!) “This is a weed that has been cultivated by humans for thousands of years, it basically grows worldwide.” But what April found most unusual is that the illegal weed was growing in a pretty barren area that had been marked off for construction. “I thought that was something police looked for and that people would try to do in seclusion, not in downtown Blythewood.” “It's possible that this plant got to be there because somebody intentionally or accidentally put seeds there,” Nelson said. (BuzzNote: Possible? Yes. Necessary? No. Kids could have been smoking in the construction site and dropped seeds. Or they could have gotten there by Nature's way of spreading cannabis seed: bird droppings.) Jughead's ambitions of becoming a Richland County drug dog, “That's right, he could teach all the other dogs,” may be a little far fetched. But April says she's proud of her pal for being on the lookout. You can click here to check out the USC Herbarium website. If you have a questionable plant in your yard, they’ll come and check it out free of charge. (BuzzNote: I'm sure they will! )
