Default TX: Hiding The High

Hiding The High
KXAN | 06/08/2006

Kids hiding drugs in places you'd never think to look. It is not a new dilemma. There are some new tricks every parent, brother, sister and friend should know.

There are the surefire signs your kids are using pot -- pipes, bongs and other obvious drug paraphernalia.

Some parents, like Juanita Scott, are confident they know all the tricks. Her kids could never get away with hiding drugs.

"You've got to be a step ahead of your kids. You've got to take charge," Scott said.

But, it's easier to hide drugs than you may think. There are safes designed to look like everyday products in your home. How about a soda can where the lid screws off or a chips can where the bottom screws off? They've even got hair spray cans and shaving cream -- places you'd never expect to find something illegal.

To see if that's true, to see if you'd really never expect it, we decided to put you to the test. We asked people on the street to see if they could tell real items and fake items used to hide items.

We bought our fake items at a headshop. They are also easy to find online and even at stores in the mall.

"You can get them out of catalogs. You can get them at headshops. Planet K," marijuana smoker David Field said.

David Field says he's smoked marijuana since he was 9-years-old. He was happy to share all the tricks he knows.

"Put it in stuffed animals. Put it in the shaving cream. I would put in between mattresses. The book. I would put it in a zipper pillow," Field said.

Small safes cost between $20 and $30. They've been on the market for awhile.

It may be nothing new to kids who try to hide things.

"People make this because we have to have privacy. Whether you're on heroine or marijuana, you have to have your privacy," marijuana smoker Matt Keele said.

Not everyone was surprised. When we showed Scott the small safes, she says with teenagers, she'd expect nothing less.

"That's how criminals operate. They think outside what we, as parents, would think would be normal. That's their whole motive to think of, 'How can I fool them?'"
Scott said.

(BuzzNote: So... Teenagers=Criminals? How about "That's how people who need to defend their privacy operate"? Do Mom and Dad keep their valuables on the coffee table or in a safe?)

So, how do you get the upper hand? Kids who use drugs say be aware. Don't just think "My kids will never do that." Ask questions and look around their room. Remember, it could be hiding in the most unsuspecting place.

"You've got to be able to trust that when you walk into their room, that can of Pringles is not hiding drugs or something you would prefer your children not to have," Scott said.

The kids can try to defend their privacy, but Mom and Dad have the right to break through that defense. Unless it's a pot smoking family where MJ use is candid, there's a reason that junior is hiding his stash in an Elrond statuette. For us not to think it's okay for parents to know about their children's secret stashes also contradicts our "no deceiving parents" mantra, with which I agree (at least for minors).

From the Posting Guidelines:
In reference to Drug Testing: We are here to help; however, we will not knowingly direct or help minors pass drug tests. In addition, we will not help users to deceive parents. If these posts are made, the threads will be closed and responses to any of these threads will be deleted.
How, exactly, does expressing a disapproval of snooping "help users to deceive parents". It has nothing to do with drug testing, which is the subject of the guidelines' provision. If parents have no respect for their children's privacy, how are the children going to learn to have respect for anyone else's privacy? Should parents read their children's diaries, their mail and email, and listen in on their telephone calls?

Do children have any right to privacy at all? Legally, no. Will they develop any kind of trusting relationship with their parents if they're always being spied on? No again.

I won't help anyone deceive their parents with drug testing but I won't endorse police-state tactics in the home.

Default this article leaves out the possibilty

This article leaves out the possibility that a responsible parent may not make their teen hide their cannabis.

"You've got to be a step ahead of your kids. You've got to take charge," Scott said.

What if you just do as my parents did.

Tell your kids once they are in high school that people are going to offer them various drugs, that cannabis is not as bad as alcohol or tobacco, and that if they want to smoke/drink they should not drive their car, and that they should not ride in cars with folks that are drunk. At the same time telling the kids if they ever get caught with cannabis that they are not to tell the cops etc. that they have their parents permission, and finally that if the teens grades are "bad" (as defined by the family) there may be stepped up search and confiscate operations within the house until the grades go back up to an accepted level.
