| Parents accused of rewarding sons with pot Staff and agencies | Local News Leader | 10 June, 2006 CHANDLER - Police have arrested a Chandler husband and wife they believe smoked marijuana with their children as a reward for "being good," police said Friday. Aaron Virgil Carlson, 23, the stepfather, and Toni Lynn Carlson, 31, were arrested Thursday at their home in the 400 block of West Aloe Place, near Ocotillo Road and Arizona Avenue, after police searched the house and learned the two were supplying the 11- and 12-year-old boys with marijuana, police said. Authorities received an anonymous tip from a neighbor and were able to get a search warrant for the house, where they found an undisclosed amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, said Sgt. Rick Griner, a Chandler police spokesman. The children also told police of their parents' habits, Griner said. Police are investigating how often the parents supplied the children with the drug and how often they would smoke it with the two boys. Marijuana was given to the boys for good behavior in general, Griner said. "Usually you get a bonus on your allowance or a movie or an extra star on your allowance chart," he said. "To get to smoke a bowl with Mom and Dad, that's pretty out there." Police believe the couple were selling marijuana but are still investigating whether the boys possessed the drug other than at home, police said. The two were arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale, drug paraphernalia, contributing to the delinquency of minors and endangerment.

| Isn't it much better for children to learn about marijuana than trying it first on the streets with some shady dealer? |

| That's way too young to be smoking pot, or using any psychoactive substance other than a prescription.

I agree with Nerphroll. Those kids ARE too young. There is no way eleven and twelve year old kids can make an informed decision regarding drug use (or herb, for that matter). They cannot knowingly weigh the pros and cons of using marijuana and decide for themselves whether this is something that they should do. All they know is Mom and Dad do it, why can't I? The reason they can't knowingly wiegh the pros and cons? Because they have no idea the impact incarceration, foster care, probation, juvenile hall, etc., will have on the remainder of their lives, they have no comprehension of how the body and mind works so they cannot decide if they want to change the chemical balance of their bodies by smoking pot. Basically they are too young to properly determine the consequences of their actions. | |

| I also think its too young! However is that because I have been raised in the US? Many European countries allow children to drink a small amount of wine at dinner. It's been reported that the children have less problems of Alcohol abuse as adults. Perhaps this could also hold true for Cannabis. |
