| Making Our Roads Safer Barossa Herald | 06/13/06 Specialist officers, dedicated to the new 'Drug driving' laws, will be on our roads from July 1, 2006. Working in mobile units, the police will now be able to test drivers for cannabis and meth amphetamines (common forms include speed, ice and crystal meth). Roadside saliva testing will be conducted in a similar way to the current random breath test. "Some hard cold facts are that 28 per cent of all motorcycle fatalities have ‘THC' – the active ingredient in cannabis, or meth amphetamines in their blood," said Sergeant Steve Heil, drug action team co-ordinator at Nuriootpa police. "Between 2003 and 2005 over 22 per cent of all drivers killed on South Australian roads tested positive to ‘THC' and meth amphetamines. "We have a road safety drive, based on our SA road safety strategy to reduce the amount of road fatalities by 40 per cent by 2010." In a world first, Victoria ran the initial campaign between December 2004 and December 2005. One in every 46 drivers tested received positive readings to have these illegal drugs in their blood stream. The test will not include prescription medicines, or even cold or flu tables. Penalties for the first offence will be a $300 expiation free of three demerit points or a court penalty of no less than $500 and no more than $900 fine, as well as the three demerit points lost. Penalties for refusal and failure to undertake a drug screening test apply as well.

| Ok, so these numbers seem a little skewed to me. Just because these people tested positive for marijuana IN THEIR BLOODSTREAM does not mean they were high. This is going to produce way too many false positives, and is just a thinly veiled attempt to gain some more marijuana-related arrests.

| That is a major problem especially here in the states. Word I heard is that in PA if you have Cannabis in your system and an officer feels like it he can test you, if you come back positive they can arrest you on the spot for a DUI even if you aren't high at the time of questioning this is no system. it needs to be overthrown |

| I agree there needs to be a line drawn somewhere. Smokin a joint on a saturday night and then getting penalized for it on a monday or tuesday is not right.

| So its a fairly instant saliva test? Anybody know much about this sort of test? Does it only come up as positive after the last few hours/days/weeks of marijuana use? does chronic or light usage have much affect on it? Anyways, this gets a /lame from me although I don't generally drive high and discourage others from doing so. |
