| Ex-Mayor In ‘Drugs’ Warning To Travellers Pam McClounie | News & Star | 06/23/2006 THE former Mayor of Allerdale, John Crouch, inadvertently smuggled drugs into the country as he returned to the UK after a trip to India. Chef John, who lives at Wigton, had spent nearly a week in Mumbai giving a cookery demonstration. He was on his way home last week after travelling from India to Amsterdam and then on to Manchester when he discovered the drugs in his jacket pocket. The Wigton councillor said: “I’d flown on two flights and gone through customs and everything. It wasn’t until I reached in my pocket to get some cash to phone my wife that I found a small plastic packet containing cannabis. “I was horrified. I have no idea how it got there but I can only assume that someone slipped it into my pocket when I was waiting around at Schipol airport in Amsterdam. “I had about three to four hours between KLM flights from Mumbai and I was waiting to travel on to Manchester. I spent the time looking in the bookshops and sitting in cafés. It must have happened then but I was totally unaware. “The scary thing is that there were sniffer dogs at the airport and I’ve no idea how I would have explained it if they’d stopped me. “I had a sachet of fennel seeds in my pocket and at first I assumed it must have been those.” Mr Crouch, who regularly gives cookery demonstrations, is now warning other Cumbrians to take care when travelling abroad. He said: “It just goes to show how easily it can happen. I kept my luggage with me at all times and the only time I took my jacket off was on the plane.” He now plans to report the matter to Cumbria Police.

| how can someone slip cannabis INTO your pocket without you knowing it. Who would waste their stash like this Who would have tried to set this guy up. I bet that he got stoned in Amsterdam, forgot that he still had a joints worth in his pocket, and then got on his plane. |

| I smell a pile of BS. I've been to Amsterdam many times and during my travels there spent much time in Schipol airport. In all of my visits, not once have I seen a sniffing dog. Second, the security personnel are far more concerned about finding weapons than they are about a little bit of bud. I personally would never try to smuggle any amount of bud from Amsterdam but having been through there about 20-25 times in the last two years I could see how easily it could be done. Reggie, I agree with you; why would anyone try to "set up" this guy? Sounds like a cover story to me and not even a good one. Maybe it was that last hit of Silver Haze from a vaporizer at the Grey Area that got to him. ![]() |
