Default AUS: Sniffer Dogs Go On Tour

Sniffer Dogs Go On Tour
Jane Metlikovec | Herald Sun | 06/24/2006

Regional revellers have been warned to stay drug-free after raids at rural nightspots.

Police used Melbourne sniffer dogs to detect drugs outside six Traralgon and Moe nightclubs and bars last weekend. Six people were charged with cannabis possession.

Supt Geoff Newby of Morwell police said: "Our intelligence led us to believe there was a climate of drug use at Latrobe Valley nightspots, and due to the success of our operation we will be sure to invite the dogs back again soon.

"A lot of people were surprised when they saw the dogs. They seemed to believe we couldn't get them to the country, and they got a very rude awakening."

One of the six found with small amounts of cannabis also had a knife.

Supt Newby said the dogs detected traces of marijuana on about 40 people, but only charged six for possession.

Nationals youth affairs spokesman Damian Drum praised police for taking their drug dogs out of the city.

"It is sending the right message to young people that drugs will not be tolerated in the country any more than they are tolerated in the city," the Bendigo-based MP said.

Drugs will not be tolerated near nightspots and bars? Yeah, kids will take that seriously.

Default Stupid cops

I hate it how they always say "one of them even had a knife!" like the person with the knife is going to use the knife to hurt someone. It was probably only a few inches long and he/she most likely just used it for opening things/ scraping pipes and all that stuff. I hate the law system.

AMEN TO THAT!!! it also pissed me off when they mentioned the knife. furthermore, anyone that is ok with alcohol but thinks marijuana should be illegal needs to rethink their values

Absolutely bewildering is the fact that while these dogs are hunting out cannabis, users of alcohol and tobacco at these bars go unmolested, yet the latter two drugs are clearly more of a public health and economic drain than cannabis will EVER be. Yes they're legal, sure, but does this make sense to ANYBODY?
DAMN YOU REEFER MADNESS!!!!

Default No fights at local bar

The bar my life long friends and I hung out in was demolished last month to make way for a Rite Aid. Until then, we were allowed to smoke Cannabis out on the deck. The local police told the bartender that they knew what was going on. However, they said that because there had not been a call for them in several years that they would not bother us. It seems that all the other bars in the area had fights on a regular basis. Everybody was too stoned to get in a fight at our bar. I would bet that there will be more violence at the bars targeted in the article.
