| Help fight drug rings, public urged Alfred Dalizon | Peoples Journal | JULY 02, 2006 ANTI-NARCOTICS officials yesterday called for increased public awareness on the evils of drugs and the community’s social responsibility to care for the well-being of children who are at the mercy of drug fiends. Marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency chairman Undersecretary Dionisio R. Santiago vowed to further step-up the campaign against illegal drug trafficking and abuse banking on the full authority given him by President Macapagal-Arroyo. Santiago said he has made clear to his men the President’s intention to cripple the illegal drugs industry at all cost through a massive government operation and with the assistance of the public. Dangerous Drugs Board chairman Secretary Anselmo S. Avenido Jr. and DDB Executive Director Edgar C. Galvante underscored the need for the citizenry to protect children from drug syndicates by being aware of the danger they pose to their communities. Both called on parents, siblings and other family members and other concerned members of the community including teachers and social workers to watch out for warning signals on drugs in their community and homes and immediately take measures to address the problem. Santiago, a retired Armed Forces chief of staff, also vowed to go after corrupt anti-narcotics officers including those involved in so-called “bangketa” operations, ‘”planting” of evidence and those who deliberately lose their cases against arrested drug offenders for a fee. Mrs. Arroyo last week declared that all anti-drugs function of the Philippine National Police will be transferred to the PDEA, the unit mandated by Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 to carry out the national anti-drug campaign. Santiago said the number of drug dependents in the country has increased by almost three million over the past six years with more than half of them classified as regular drug users. He added that demand for marijuana, which remains a favorite among drug users due to its availability and much cheaper price, increased by 20 percent this year, just after the PDEA noted a drop in the sale of shabu last year. |
