| Czech Republic A Good Model For Marijuana Policy 07-05-06 | Lahontanvalleynews.com I'm writing about Jason Haynie's not-so-thoughtful letter, "Marijuana piece lacked reasoning, a good solution." It was Haynie's letter that lacked reasoning and a good solution, not your thoughtful editorial, "It's Time To Enact New State Marijuana Policy." In the Czech Republic, citizens can legally grow and possess small quantities of marijuana. The Czech overall drug arrest rate is 1 per 100,000 population. The U. S. overall drug arrest rate is 585 per 100,000 population. The Czech robbery rate is two per 100,000 population. The U. S. robbery rate is 145.9 per 100,000 population, according to the FBI. According to our drug war cheerleaders, tolerant marijuana laws cause people to use other, much more dangerous drugs like meth and heroin. Obviously, this doesn't happen in the Czech Republic. Why not? Could it be that when people can legally obtain marijuana at an affordable price, they tend not to use or desire any other recreational drugs? Could it be that marijuana legalization actually creates a roadblock to hard drug use, not a gateway? Kirk Muse Mesa, Ariz.

| For people who are subject to drug testing, marijuana's long latency period in the human body certainly discourages its use. It turns people towards more dangerous drugs which you can use on Friday and be clean by Monday.

| i agree with buzzby and that short article makes so much sense. i was in the czech republic and it was pretty laid back and a really good atmosphere. besides, personally i think that alcohol is a drug that leads to violence... violent crimes, domestic crimes... maybe if marijuana was legalized people could realize what a peaceful drug it is compared to other things. i really dont understand the logic people use when they say it will lead to harder and more dangerous drug use. smoking a joint is NOT anything like doing these drugs, and personally i dont believe it leads to it at all. if anything is the gateway drug of anything its alcohol... especially since people tend to decide to do a lot of stupid things while under the influence of that. end rant |
