| Law Student Arrested Man, 24, Faces Charges In Connection With 13 Pounds Of Marijuana David Owens | Hartford Courant | 08/25/2006 SOUTH WINDSOR -- An aspiring lawyer with a record of arrests for drug dealing capped his first day of law school Wednesday by getting arrested in the alleged transportation of more than 13 pounds of marijuana to South Windsor, police said. Officers with the East Central Narcotics Task Force, South Windsor and Manchester police, and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents were waiting for Nicholas A. Lohr, 24, to arrive in the parking lot at the Lowe's home center in South Windsor. A confidential informant had tipped them that Lohr made regular trips to the area with large amounts of marijuana and that he would be arriving Wednesday night. Lohr, of 2000 Commonwealth Ave., Apt. 1404, Brighton, Mass., had two large trash bags of packaged marijuana in the rented car he drove to South Windsor, police said. Police later determined the total weight at 13.27 pounds and had a street value of about $160,000. The marijuana was labeled with the names "Sour Diesel" and "Grape." Police said the names indicate the marijuana was high quality and worth about $800 an ounce. Police had the parking lot under surveillance when Lohr arrived about 8:10 p.m. in a rented red Dodge Caliber. Police said they watched him walk into the Lowe's store, then return to his car without buying anything. Officers then blocked his car and a drug-sniffing dog named Boris was brought over. Manchester Police Sgt. Sandy Ficara, who was assigned to the narcotics task force, said the dog easily detected marijuana in the car, which gave officers the probable cause they needed to search it. "God, I could smell the marijuana myself," Ficara said Thursday. Lohr was taken into custody without incident and held with bail set at $750,000 on charges of possession of more than a kilogram of marijuana, possession of more than 4 ounces of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia. Lohr has previous drug arrests in Vermont and New Jersey. During his arraignment Thursday in Superior Court in Manchester, Judge Raymond Norko doubled his bail to $1.5 million. Lohr's attorney, Robert Britt, tried to argue for lower bail, but Norko listed the previous drug arrests in his decision to double Lohr's bond. When told that Wednesday was Lohr's first day of classes at the New England School of Law in Boston, Norko responded that it was also "probably his last." |

| "Police said the names indicate the marijuana was high quality and worth about $800 an ounce." I am sorry but if the bulk price is 800 an ounce, or 100 an eighth at bulk buying by the pound, then buying an eighth would be 200 dollars (people that sell cannabis often double their investment) which is more expensive than cocaine. (an 8 ball of high quality rocket fuel is only 200 dollars in Chicago). We can get the same kind of buds in Chicago, top end dank, for 300 to 400 an ounce when only buying an ounce, and 50 or 60 and eighth when only buying 3.5 grams. Is cannabis really 2 times as expensive in Boston??? "13.27 pounds and had a street value of about $160,000." what the hell??? I have never heard of anyone paying over 3000 dollars for a pound of top quality pot in Chicago. if you buy 13 pounds at a time you would get a price break and probably not have to spend more than 30,000 dollars. lets do some math here 28 grams = 1 oz 28 x 16 (16 ounces in a pound) = 348 grams per pound 348 x 13= 4524 grams 160,000 4,524 /= 35.36 dollars per gram who in the hell pays 35 dollars a gram? Hell one could make a fortune just buying in Chicago and Selling in Boston. |

| Reggie_The_Dog this is pretty common in the states - Cops value marijuana at much higher prices, mostly to make it seem as if what they're doing carries much more merit then it in fact does. This is nothing new. In fact, a bunch of us on another website forum a week ago were commenting about how surprised we were when we noticed in another bust, cops actually valued it accurately, which is very rare. It's true, people often buy from other places, places where marijuana is grown heavily - to sell in other places where it's more scarce at a inflated price. This is nothing new and is how many businesses (legal and illegal) run. Living in Boston, I can tell you high quality marijuana sells for mostly $300-450 an ounce, which I'm sure is about average for most cities. |

| "The marijuana was labeled with the names "Sour Diesel" and "Grape." Police said the names indicate the marijuana was high quality and worth about $800 an ounce." I've had sour diesel before and it was valued at about $350-$400 for a ounce. That's about what high quality marijuana is truly valued at in the state of Connecticut. A gram of high quality marijuana is valued at around $15-$20 a gram, not $35 a gram! No one in their right mind would pay that much! "God, I could smell the marijuana myself," Ficara said Thursday." Yea, i hope you went to the hospital for breathing in that odor and got checked for brain damage Over 80 years ago marijuana was coming into this country legally thousands of pounds at at a time and no one cared, life went on. The second something becomes illegal is when something that no one cared about or paid attention to is then at the publics attention thanks to politicians. It's the very reason marijuana became un regulated and created the black market prices, corruption, and violence associated with prohibition of a plant. 13 pounds and his bail is at $1.5million dollars? Is part of the reason his bail was doubled is because of the cops over estimated value of the marijuana? |
