Default FL: State Workers Face Marijuana Charges

State Workers Face Marijuana Charges
TaMaryn Waters | Tallahassee Democrat | 09/12/2006

A tip regarding possible drug activity led to the arrests of three employees working at the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Terence McElroy, spokesman for the agency, said the arrests were made Aug. 25 following a surveillance investigation. He said an employee suspected there were "illegal marijuana sales" being conducted at one of the agency's buildings in the Conner Complex on Conner Boulevard.

The building was used as a warehouse to store furniture and equipment used by the agency.

The employees were Benny Hill Jr., 36, a distribution agent for the department; James Hensley, 53, a training manager of agricultural environmental services; and Susan Roberts, 49, a senior word-processing systems operator.

Hill was charged with two felony counts of intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana. Hensley was charged with possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana.

Roberts was charged with a misdemeanor possession of 20 grams or less.

The employees have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The arrests were made by the department's inspector general's office.

McElroy said there have been arrests in the past regarding employees stealing equipment and minor infractions, but he said this was an unusual case.

"I can't remember a number of people being arrested on some sort of ring," said McElroy, who's been with the department for 12 years. "The investigation is clearly continuing to see if there's anyone else involved."
