Default CA: Upland council bans marijuana sales

Upland council bans marijuana sales
11-15-06 l Daily Bulletin

UPLAND -- Marijuana sales were prohibited after a unanimous vote at Monday's City Council meeting.

The plant can still be smoked by residents who have a medical need and permission from their physician, said council members, but marijuana retail outlets have been banned from the city.

"(The vote) is to prevent dedicated point of sales," said Bill Curley, city attorney.

Based on the controversy surrounding the issue, council members have said there is tension behind the subject.

State law permits it but federal law prohibits it, Curley said.

Despite the idea of self-help, the city decided that the dispensaries would not have brought anything to Upland.

Anybody who has a proper permit is able to cultivate it, possess it, use it or transport it, Curley said. "(The vote) won't alter that. It doesn't impact the people who have permission to use it."

If you're a bed-ridden terminal cancer patient, how are you supposed to run around trying to grow your own weed? If you're stuck in a wheel chair because of advanced MS, how the hell are you supposed to play farmer? These council members have their heads up their collective ass.

Proposition 215 established the idea of "caregivers" for those patients who don't have the ability to produce their own medicine. On top of that, efficiencies of scale make it much more reasonable to have central growing and distribution facilities. Why have 100 grow rooms in 100 houses when you could have one grow room with truly expert growers and a much less wasteful use of electricity and other resources?
