Default TX: Parents Sue City After Son Dies in Police Custody

Parents Sue City After Son Dies in Police Custody
12.31.06|My Fox News Dallas

The parents of a Texas man who died in police custody of blunt-force trauma that fractured his skull are suing the city of Fort Worth and Tarrant County.
The parents of 27-year-old Angelo Allums Jr., who died in February, say jail officers "brutally attacked" their son and used "unnecessary and excessive force."

Allums was arrested Feb. 10 on drug charges. He called his parents and said he had been choked by police and was having difficulty breathing, said Mike Payma, the Allums' lawyer.

Jail records indicate Allum was injured when he hit his head in his cell.

Police eventually transported Allums to a hospital, where he died.

"What we believe is that he had been choked and that they refused to let him see a doctor," Payma said.

The county medical examiner determined Allums had a fractured skull but the body showed no signs of being put in a stranglehold or choked. The autopsy found no defensive wounds. Allums had traces of cocaine and marijuana in the body, according to toxicology results.

Nizam Peerwani, the Tarrant County medical examiner, ruled the cause of death as undetermined because he was not sure how an inmate could "bang his head and be left unattended."

"We're leaving it open until things become more clear to us," Peerwani said.

A Fort Worth police spokesman and a city attorney declined comment.

NewgrowerNY,
Did you post this story because you think the incident was a result of the suspect's drug use?

I though I read it was excessive force used on a drug raid. Its very possible I am mistaken.
