Default GBR: Study Links Marijuana To Crime

Study Links Marijuana To Crime
01.07.07|Playfuls.com

A British survey finds that half of all crime suspects and 57 percent of young offenders admit recent smoking of marijuana. The Home Office, for the first time, questioned people who had just been arrested, the Daily Mail reported. The rate of marijuana use was significantly higher than expected.

The government downgraded cannabis from a Class B to a Class C drug in 2004.

"These alarming statistics raise serious questions about the consequences of the government's chaotic and confused policy on drugs," said David Davis, the Conservative Party's Shadow Home Secretary. "We have long said that drugs fuel all sorts of crime. This is because they both undermine a person's sense of responsibility but also because takers and addicts need money to feed their habit."

While 57 percent of those arrested were identified as problem drinkers, far smaller percentages said they had used heroin or cocaine.

Let's see if we can analyze this "startling discovery"!

1. Criminals are not inhibited by the existence of laws against the crimes they commit.

2. Marijuana is illegal, highly enjoyable, and readily available.

3. Persons not inhibited by the existence of laws against serious crimes wouldn't hesitate to use marijuana because of its illegality.

Ergo: There is no causal link between marijuana use and crime. Both marijuana use and crime come from a common source: a lack of concern about breaking the law.

Marijuana is non-addictive and relatively inexpensive. I rarely spend more on pot for a month than the cost of a decent restaurant meal for two. Irresponsible people will use drugs as an excuse for their irresponsibility, but marijuana is not one of the drugs that's likely cause the disinhibition to which they're referring. As usual, the prohibitionists treat all drugs as if they were heroin. Marijuana presents far fewer dangers than alcohol and tobacco. In the US, 2,100 people die every year from taking aspirin. Marijuana has never killed anyone in all of recorded history.

lol I was just thinkin that same thing, too... I was like wait can't they link anything to crime. How about caffeine intake? If they previously consumed soda shoulda soda be illegal for being "harmful"?
