Default CA: State Imposes 1000% Fee Hike on Medical Mariuana ID Cards

State Imposes 1000% Fee Hike on Medical Mariuana ID Cards
01-10-07 | BeyondChron.Org | kevin Reed

The California Dept of Health Services has announced a major fee hike for the state medical marijuana ID cards, from $13 to $142. This is the state's share; counties charge an additional fee. On behalf of thousands of San Francisco cannabis patients I am writing to ask if you have heard about this new outrageous policy. Patients need your help NOW more than ever. With the new local laws requiring patients to get the State I.D. card to enter MCD's and now this drastic increase in the card program by almost $150, patients will need to pay $200 for an ID card every year. This has gone far beyond preposterous. Where are patient's rights? How can patients afford to keep fighting bad policy?

According to- D. Gieringer of Cal NORML, the California Dept of Health Services has announced a major fee hike for the state medical marijuana ID cards, from $13 to $142. This is the state's share; counties charge an additional fee.

The increase is allegedly needed to cover the cost of the program, which has been running at a major deficit.

Applications for the state card have been running far behind expectations. So far only 5,631 cards have been issued. Estimates of the actual number of Prop 215 patients run from 150,000 to 350,000.

Only 23 of the state's 58 counties currently offer ID cards. Officials are hopeful that enrollment will take off once the San Diego lawsuit is settled and other, large counties come aboard, such as Los Angeles. However, the fee increase is likely to have the effect of discouraging new applicants.

I dont understand how the money could be used to support the cost of the program.

What does the program do besides printing up medical marijuana cards? They certainly do not grow or distribute the medicine.

Cool Your right norn.....

all they do is print the cards. But see, you've got the government involved in it now, and they have this huge deficit to pay for, and ain't nothing for free in this world.

Probably should be happy that they haven't raised it to a thousand.....

Legalize It!

Yep, even with a price hike on the cards, they'd still be making a ton more of taxing the legal sale of it.

It would be reasonable to pay a one-time fee of about $150 to get the card but not every year. How can the program be running a deficit? If they program is running a deficit they have to fire the people running the program because paper, ink, and the cost of running a printer isn't that much.

What do you expect, the government is going to tax marijuana especially since there is sooooooo soooo sooo much money in that business.
I don't think its right nor do i want the government to do it.

I have no problem with the government taxing it. I hate to sound like a redneck, but if you have a problem paying taxes, there's lots of countries out there that don't force you to. Take your pick. Personally, I like having nice, smooth roads to ride on. I also like being able to go to a park without it being covered in garbage, and the welfare system is also nice. You may not like part of your pay going to someone less fortunate, but some people don't really have any other options besides welfare. (And I'm not talking about those freeloading bums that move to california because we give them more food stamps.)

In short, if paying a tax on the bud not only frees me up to smoke when and where I want, I have no problem. It'd also open a lot of places up for new choices in what they smoke, maybe bring some chronic where there was only schwag. (of course the downside is you know they will make growing illegal, since they can't get taxes off of it. or they'll still have it so it's illegal to pick up an OZ of your favorite nugs from your favorite grower.)

Don't forget many people dont pay their taxes and see it was optional. I know almost all my dealers never pay their taxes.
