Police send notes to parents of kids seen at suspected drug den

Some Grosse Pointe-area parents could get an unusual letter in the mail from police stating that their child has been hanging out at a suspected drug den in the upscale Detroit suburb.

Police plan to tell 20 or more parents their teens were seen by undercover officers frequenting the home of a mother arrested on suspicion of allowing kids to smoke marijuana.

In some cases, police have watched as parents drop their kids off at the home.

No charges will be filed against the teens because police don't know what they were doing inside the house. They were identified through license plate numbers by detectives during stakeouts.

Ah yes, the suburbs in the good old USA, so 20 or more parents will be notified, so lets say 20 (this means that they have seen 10 teenagers at the house other than the ones living there, hardly a feat considering the way most of us hung out in groups in high school.) 10 different teenagers ACCUSED OF SMOKING POT IN A HOUSE, NOT EVEN AT THE SAME TIME!!!! gasp GASP GASP

How many of us could have said the same about the houses we grew up in (yes thats counting the back yard and the toolshed as well as the garage and the attic). How many of us smoked at our parents houses with 10 different people in a given 3 month period????????

It sounds like the cops are trying to say the mother was letting the kids smoke. Perhaps she didn't even know, or perhaps she did and thought it was better that her kid smoked at home than in their car so she tolerated smoking in her house.

These cops have nothing better to do than a huge operation to catch teenagers smoking cannabis in a house.

As a parent, I would be royally pissed if some other adult was allowing my minor child to use drugs at her house with her knowledge. It's irresponsible and illegal. I'd want her thrown in jail. I'd feel the same as if she was allowing them to drink or if she was having sex with them. There are some things you simply don't do with other people's children.

I would certainly appreciate it if the police informed me about what my child was up to behind my back.

I'm all for legalization of marijuana. However, as a parent, it's up to me to educate my child (and any future children) about drugs. It's also up to me to teach them about sex, alcohol, and other moral dilemmas they may face throughout life.
It's not up to someone in a random house near the school. It's up to me, the parent.

Does anyone else get a creepy feeling about someone who invites random youth into their home for the purposes of smoking pot, or is it just me?

This is exactly why I make every effort to not have any marijuana-related dealings with minors, whether it's simply smoking a joint, buying, selling or cultivating. As an adult, the legal implications are compounded, for one. For two, I'd be viewed the same way I view the person smoking out high school kids in their house.... CREEPY!

Well...As a parent I would appreciate it if they would contact me after they convict the person of supplying cannabis to a minor.

Innocent until proven guilty and all that.

When i was in high school I smoked at a friends house, his parents knew, they talked with my parents and agreed that it was better to smoke inside than on the street (hence garage smoking was in at my house too).

This woman has been convicted of nothing. How can they prove that she LET the teens smoke in her house?

Also just wondering at what age you folks will let your kids start smoking cannabis?

I live in a country where the alcohol and tobacco ages are 16, but realistically most young people start to smoke cannabis and tobacco and drink alcohol in the 11 to 14 range.

My idea is to have no age limit, just a "passing grades" requirement at school and a "safe sex" requirement in their bedroom. My wife is more apt to choose an age limit of 16, personally I think the "passing grades" requirment teaches responsability whereas the age limit just teaches that they can do as they want at a certain age.

Personally I expect that my kids will probably try cannabis, cocaine, LSD, MDMA, mushrooms, opium, poppers, downers etc. like most of us did. I don't want to alienate them too much, but if they are flunking school or having unsafe sex I will put my foot down big time.

When I was 17 I got robbed getting a quarter pound in Chicago. My father heard about the event by accidentally picking up the phone while I was talking about it to a friend.

He told me 2 things.

1. SHUT UP ON THE PHONE, NO DRUG TALK

2. Call such and such number, you know the voice, its a family friend, get your quarter pounds from him. So I got better weed for a better price than all my friends AND NO LONGER RISKED GOING TO THE GHETTO. Sure my father and his friend supplied cannabis to a minor, but they knew I would not quit, and that I had all A's on my report card my entire junior year, so they figured they would REDUCE THE POTENTIAL HARM of my habit by REDUCING MY TIME SPENT IN THE GHETTO. Not really a bad thing in the end.

What would you do if it were your kid that got robbed in the hood scoring buds??? (this is an honest question, not a smart assed question.)

That is entirely different than allowing other people's children to use drugs in your home without the parents' knowledge.

They don't have to prove anything. They're simply warning the parents about something of which they have some knowledge.

I offered my daughter some when she was 18. She wasn't interested. Her observation of the potheads in high school and college told her that it wasn't a good thing. I tried to explain to her that the visible potheads are the ones who have gotten caught up in it and gotten their lives out of balance. She still wasn't interested.

I'd do the same thing your father did.
