| Premier no fan of pot motion 02.04.07|winnipegfreepress.com PREMIER Gary Doer says he is not a fan of the idea of decriminalizing marijuana. A resolution up for debate at the NDP's weekend convention called for small amounts of the drug to be decriminalized. The issue is within federal jurisdiction so the resolution specifically calls for the provincial government to push for the decriminalization. The former Liberal government had begun moving in that direction but the idea was shelved when the Tories took office in January 2006. And Doer said Saturday he doesn't think it should be revisited because it would affect Canadians' ability to cross the U.S. border. "I'm not in favour of decriminalizing marijuana because I think there is a real issue of Canada-U.S. relations," said Doer. "We're trying to deal with issues of the border and issues of passports and trying to have an agreement with the United States and I don't think this helps it at this point in time." The premier said he's never tried marijuana. |

| come on, stand up for yourself, and say that you live in Canada and you don't give a damn the US government will hassle you, and remind the USA that cannabis is legal in Alaska, which shares a frontier with Canada, and that perhaps you might want to tighten border crossings with the USA as a result. |

| Even in public, if it is in your pocket its in private. If you are smoking in the street it is in public view. Also you can grow 20 plants in your yard if you want, so that one ounce limit is trumped by the 20 plant limit. The constitution of Alaska nullifies the law, its about privacy. The law cannot limit your privacy so the law was declared unconstitutional. Canada is not talking about legalizing, they would just put their laws more in line with states like California, Ohio, Colorado. |

| Ok, but still, the USA is crying about Canada PERHAPS going decrim. Well, medical cannabis is legal in Washington, Alaska, and Montana, they border Canada. In addittion cannabis is decriminalized in Minnesota, Maine, New York, Alaska, and Ohio (where you can have 100 grams and get a ticket of 100 dollars, or 200 grams and get a misdemenor fine of 200 to 400 dollars). These states all border Canada. |
