| B.I.S.D Meets With Teacher Charged With Drug Possession 02.27.07|kcbd news The Brownfield High School teacher charged with drug possession is getting her chance to tell her story, to the school district at least. Late this afternoon, the Brownfield's Superintendent met with Amanda Cornelsen. NewsChannel 11 was the first station to tell you the teacher was arrested in Lubbock Saturday. Police say they found marijuana when pulling Cornelsen and Craig William Atkinson over. Both have since bonded out of jail on various drug charges, but Tuesday we've learned the car belonged to Cornelsen. Cornelsen remains on paid administrative leave tonight. Brownfield Superintendent Jerry Jones tells NewsChannel 11 Cornelsen gave her side of the story in Tuesday's meeting, however he didn't release any details. NewsChannel 11 spoke with Cornelsen Tuesday afternoon, and she said she couldn't offer a comment. Meanwhile, some parents are raising questions about Brownfield I.S.D's hiring policies. Some parents NewsChannel 11 spoke with Tuesday say the arrest comes as a shock. Many said it's not something they expect to happen in Brownfield and now, they're concerned about who's teaching their children. Debbie Soto, a parent of two I.S.D. students say, "I'm shocked number one and they should be at least more careful with teachers." "You never know what's going on up there. It's kinda a scary who's teaching your kids," says Mary Salas, parent of BHS student. Superintendent Jones tells us the district's primary focus is the students, so background and reference checks are done on teachers before they're hired. However, the district does not require teachers to be drug tested before they're hired nor are they tested randomly. We did learn however, under district policy, bus drivers and students involved in extracurricular activities are drug tested. Again, Cornelsen is on paid administrative leave and her contract is expected to be discussed at the March school board meeting. We also spoke with the Lubbock District Attorney's office this afternoon and they are expected to review the case. |

| They sure beat this teacher up on the news and to the local populace. I guess this is standard procedure when a teacher is involved. I'm not sure on the whole facts, but if she didn't get caught on school grounds, I don't think she should get punished. I went on the site and watched the local video of the news story and they really showed the negative side and almost enjoyed bringing this woman down. I guess the news channel needs ratings. The interviews with the local people were right on queue. It gave everyone a chance to get up on their soap box and preach. I feel bad for people in small towns where something like this is top news ![]() |

You would think these parents just found out the teacher robbed a bank and killed 12 people while doing so. I dont think a little marijuana is going to hurt anyone, its not like she brought it to school and used it or gave it to the students. | |

| Consider for a minute that 1 out of 4 people in the 20 to 40 range smoke cannabis in a given month. These folks would not care if their kids teacher got caught with cannabis while NOT AT WORK. So somewhere between 25% and 50% of households would not care (this depends on whether or not 2 parents, or 1 parent smokes cannabis). The newspapers and tv news just interview the parents that do not smoke. When I taught I had parents that grew and let their kids sell it etc. I could not imagine that they would care if I had weed at home, especially considering that their kids were trying to sell me some. I teach wearing hemp clothing that has small cannabis leaves on it and I have never had a problem or a received a negative comment. Of course I no longer teach in the USA. But I used to do it there as well. Of course over here in France they do not drug test people to get jobs either. A major reason that I love living here. |

| What is just sad to me is that no where in the story does this reporter write of the Teacher as being a very important professional in our society and write of her achievments in the classromm. Seems everyone decided that since she was caught with Marijuana none of those things matter. Society has decided to label users of Marijuana as some sort of sub-human species that shoupld be whipped and thrown in a pit somewhere. Very sad country we live in.
