Highway patrols honored for efforts against drug trafficking

The Montana Highway Patrol and the Rocky Mountain Highway Patrol Network recently received a national award at a drug conference in New Orleans for its efforts to disrupt drug trafficking on the region's highways.

Highway patrol agencies from Utah, Colorado and Wyoming are also members of the network.

Capt. Kenton Hickethier of Great Falls accepted the award on behalf of the highway patrol, which was given at a national meeting by the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

"It was an honor to receive this award. It signifies the dedication of the highway patrol and the network," Hickethier said. "It also recognizes the aggressive stand our agency is taking on disrupting the drug traffic flow."
In 2006, patrol officers from the four states seized a total of 7,600 pounds of marijuana, 754 pounds of cocaine, 200 pounds of methamphetamine, 18 submachine guns and 11 handguns and rifles, said Montana Attorney General Mike McGrath.

More than 500 felony arrests were made and 145 vehicles were seized after officers found hidden compartments in them, authorities said.

Authorities also discovered $900,000 worth of stolen property and $1.7 million in cash during searches performed in 2006.
