Default NH: House rejects medical marijuana

N.H. House rejects medical marijuana

03.28.07|Boston Herald

The House voted narrowly Wednesday to reject legalizing marijuana use for medicinal purposes.

The House voted 186-177 to kill a bill that would have allowed the illegal drug’s use for treatment of debilitating medical conditions.

Supporters argued marijuana is the only drug that helps people with some illnesses.

Lancaster Democrat Evelyn Merrick, a cancer survivor, said her treatment often was worse than the disease.

"How many others must we allow to suffer needlessly?" she said.

Westmoreland Democrat William Chase, who treated cancer patients as a surgeon, said effective therapy is illusive.

But opponents said the bill had too many problems, especially on controlling who could grow marijuana.

"We have ample therapeutic equivalents legally available," said Durham Democrat Joseph Miller, a retired doctor.

Miller said legal drugs are administered by pill, injection, spray or under the tongue -- not by smoking them, which is unhealthy.

Hinsdale Democrat William Butynski said the bill would allow people and their caregivers to grow marijuana.

"There is no such thing as medical marijuana," he said.

Well, considering the sometimes reactionary mindset found in New Hampshire, I would consider the closeness of the vote to be a victory of sorts..the radio report stated that many members had doubts with the language of the bill (which I did not read) and perhaps with a little tweaking and tightening up, things will go better in the next session....
In Maine there is a petition circulating to rewrite and clarify the medicinal marijuana law but if I recall it calls for allowing 99 plants or 6 pounds per patient...that is insanity and will be perceived by some (maybe even me) as a license to deal.

I heard about the Maine legislation circulating as well. Apparently it's not from any of the more credible organizations like DPA, MPP, or NORML. They just need to make the amounts sensible.

As for the New Hampshire vote, I see it as a victory coming up in the next couple of years.

Is that because those are the drugs prescribed by your brothers in your guild? The people who need these drugs and have used them tell us that in many cases marijuana is much more effective and has far fewer undesirable side effects.

Since most of the Reefer Madness™ lies have ceased to hold water with the general public, it seems that the prohibitionists have to fall back on this appeal to authority: "Doctors know everything and we should unquestioningly follow their advice."

We need to promote the truth: Marijuana can be administered in many ways other than smoking if a person is concerned about the effects of smoking. The truth is that the supposed dangers of smoking marijuana pale in comparison to the real dangers of the side effects of most pharmaceuticals.

No one in their right mind thinks that morphine is a safer way to kill pain than smoking a joint, especially neuropathic pain that doesn't respond well to opiates. No one in their right mind would tell a chemotherapy patient who can't keep anything down that his relief from the nausea (if it works at all) requires him to swallow a pill.

I wouldn't worry too much. The Free State Project is working alongside NORML to reform marijuana laws, so the opposition to medical cannabis has a lot to face in NH!
