Governor signs medical marijuana bill

Governor Bill Richardson on Monday morning signed into law a measure that makes New Mexico the 12th state to allow the use of medical marijuana.

The bill requires a doctor’s permission to use marijuana. Patients with debilitating illnesses or in hospice whose doctors recommended them could be certified to use marijuana.

The patients could not grow their own. The New Mexico Health Department would be in charge of obtaining and distributing it.

Richardson described the measure as a humane piece of legislation that assures sufficient safeguards.

“This law will allow much needed relief for New Mexicans suffering from debilitating diseases,” said Richardson. “It is the right thing to do.”

The measure creates an eight-person team of health-care professionals with expertise in serious medical conditions to oversee the program.

The bill takes effect on June 15.

Richardson also signed measures to protect victims of domestic violence. They increase probation time and create a special team to review domestic violence homicides.

We should all send $5 to the Richardson for President campaign and tell him why. If he can get elected or even become a front-runner for the nomination it might free up other politicians from their terror of ever saying anything positive about the possibility of legalizing marijuana.

Didn't Canada do something similar and practically make MMJ useless? I'm not against the idea but I hope they can meet the requirements of the patients.

I just spent the week end with a friend that is one of the 1400 canadians certified to use/grow his own for medical purposes.

He was telling me that the canadian govt. does have a program that supplys some patients, but that the quality is way below par. and is aprox. 300.00 US per ounce.
