| Medical marijuana bill advances 04.11.07|Boston Globe PROVIDENCE, R.I. --A bill that would make permanent a law allowing the use of marijuana for medical purposes advances at the Statehouse. The bill passed a House committee yesterday and now heads to the full House. Meanwhile, a Senate panel is scheduled to vote today on the same legislation. Rhode Island last year became the 11th state to legalize marijuana for patients suffering from certain serious illnesses. The law passed despite a veto from Gov. Carcieri. A total of 244 Rhode Islanders are now permitted to possess small amounts of marijuana under the state's medical marijuana program. But those licenses will become invalid if the law is not renewed by June 30th.
