Marijuana march: far-right and dope smokers face off

A series of anti-prohibition rallies, advocating the legalization of marijuana, were met by angry locals in Debrecen, and, in Szeged, by far right supporters of Jobbik

At Debrecen's rally on Sunday afternoon, locals prevented the event's start by stepping up to the podium and yelling that the demonstration should not take place.

One of them, MTI reported, a known speaker at anti-government protests in Debrecen, brandished a spade and shouted that he had come to the event to "bury hemp."

Police present asked the locals to leave, but they refused to do so, saying they would let speak only those who were asking for more stringent laws against drug users. At the Szeged demonstration, events were disrupted by Jobikk supporters, who also said the government should be more, and not less, strict with people found using drugs. The rallies, also held in Pécs, were organized as part of the International Global Marijuana March. In total, some 200 cities around the world participated in events aiming to promote liberalization of existing drug laws.

MTI reports that the youth arm of the liberal junior governing Free Democrats (SzDSz) party also organized a demonstration on Budapest's Margaret Island. Under Hungarian law, drug trafficking is punishable by five to 10 years imprisonment, and drug consumption by up to five years.

Hungarian law enforcement found hashish worth Ft11m ($59,800) in a car stopped on the M7 motorway, a customs and excise official told MTI on Sunday (May 13). One of the car's fenders was found to contain 3.2 kilograms of the drug, said Jeno Sipos, the customs authority spokesman.
