I would hope that if I were carrying 300 pounds of weed, I'd be smart enough not to speed. It's very likely that the police either knew something about this load or something made them suspicious. Speeding gave them an excuse for a stop-and-search.

Last year I was driving from Denver to Cincinnati in a rented Ford Explorer on I-70. I got pulled over for being three miles per hour over the speed limit. Cars were whizzing past me going much faster. The local cops in this Missouri town were out trolling for drug mules and a rental car with out-of-state license plates was enough to make them look for an excuse to pull me over.

If you're holding, don't provide a reason for the cops to stop you. Don't speed. Don't tailgate. Stay between the lines. Don't make a lot of lane changes. Don't sit in the passing lane. Check all of your lights before you set out.

I got away with it, even though they found the two joints in my backpack. I didn't even get a speeding ticket! They were after bigger fish and threw me back in the pond. They even apologized for the inconvenience. One of the officers said, "Sorry to hassle you but we're out here fighting The Drug War." I was so freaked that I didn't even stop to sleep. I drove 1,400 miles in one shot with stops to gas up and pee.

That's cool they didn't hassle you though, and even apologized.

I considered being made to stand by the side of the road for 40 minutes without a jacket on a cold and windy night a hassle. I considered being pulled over for speeding when others were going 10 mph faster to be a hassle. I considered their search of my vehicle against my refusal and without grounds for "reasonable suspicion" to be a hassle. They brought in a supposed "drug dog" who "alerted" on everything in sight, including a police car and a rock by the side of the road. I wonder why they didn't search the police car or the rock?

I suspect that one reason they didn't hassle me about the two joints is that they knew their search was illegal and any charges wouldn't have held up in court. They didn't even confiscate the pair of doobies!

Well damn man you didn't mention that! Didn't know you were freezing your giblet's off in the cold for 40.

Anyway, it's like you said, they were after bigger fish. They need bigger drug busts, like the one this article was about, to flash in front of the American public with their rank bullshit saying, "See, the War on Drugs is working!"

And hey, at least they didn't take your doob's man!
