Cannabidiol May be Effective in Preventing Bovine Spongiforme Enzephalopathy (Mad Cow Disease)
09-16-07|BBS News|Edited by: Michael Hess

(IACM) According to basic research of scientists of the National Centre for Scientific Research in Valbonne, France, cannabidiol (CBD) may prevent the development of prion diseases, the most known being BSE (bovine spongiforme enzephalopathy), which is often called mad cow disease. It is believed that the BSE may be transmitted to human beings. In humans, it is known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

The infectious agent in prion diseases is believed to be a specific type of misfolded protein called prion. Misfolded prion proteins carry the disease between individuals and cause deterioration of the brain. The French researchers reported that the non- psychoactive cannabis constituent CBD inhibited the accumulation of prion proteins in both mouse and sheep prion- infected cells, whereas other cannabinoids were either weak or not effective. Moreover, after infection with mouse scrapie, a prion disease, CBD limited accumulation of the prion protein in the brain and significantly increased the survival time of infected mice. CBD inhibited the nerve damaging effects of prions in a concentration-dependent manner. Researchers noted that CBD may be a promising agent for the treatment of prion diseases.

That's great, we're finally moving somewhere. Now medical researchers are going to look more seriously into the medical properties of marijuana. It may be legalized quicker than we think now...keep ur thumbs crossed!!

CBD has been shown to have many medicinal properties. Sadly for MM patients, breeders have pretty much taken CBD out of the equation if buying seeds commercially.

Some land races still have CBD and hemp has high CBD ratios, so hopefully somebody will start thinking of MM users and start breeding for CBD levels to help medically and quit breeding for "the high" that bring in the big bucks but shortchange those that smoke to alleviate pain and suffering.

I doubt that there's going to be a lot of effort devoted to a drug for a disease as rare as CJD. It occurs in only one person per million population.

Research has shown cannabis and cannabinoids are useful in the treatment of much more common diseases and that's where we can hope to see some movement.

Hell...if I had access to unlimited amounts of cannabis and never had any fear of legal repercussions--i'd never use any other recreational drug again--ever.

EDIT: Okay, exept for the psilocybe fungal-friend of mine, DMT (in it's natural plant form), Saliva...well, basically any natural shamanically-time-tested/approved substance. No booze, no "hard drugs"...only power plants and the like ON OCCASION for special ceremonies and healing friends/patients.

I read once that Tibetan monks were once given a psychedelic dose of cubensis--and they were totally "un-impressed". They basically said that it put them into the same places they normally go just by their own daily concentrated meditations. . .

Sorry to get off the path here

Richard Alpert, the Harvard psychologist who metamorphized into Ram Dass, once gave his Indian guru a rather large dose of LSD. The guru sat there for a while and then began to make weird faces and utter strange sounds. Alpert thought to himself, "Oh my God, I've driven this wonderful man completely out of his mind!" Then the guru cracked up and rolled around on the floor. He was just goofing on Alpert. The LSD had no effect at all.

After it was over, the guru told Alpert that LSD was like "darshan", a visit with a holy person. It gives you a chance to see what higher consciousness is like but it won't make it part of your ongoing life. The guru lived there.

I was told once that some people that suffer from Alzheimer's could actually be suffering from CJD. But this is as close as I could find at the moment to help support that.

CNN.com - Mad cow, Alzheimer's proteins are similar - study - August 24, 2000

Still kind of scary though.

edit: My point was if CJD has some sort of link with Alzheimer's then it's possible a lot more people are suffereing from CJD and could be helped with cannabis.

This is interesting. A while back I read an article about certain countries removing marijuana from the cow's diet. It had been a normal practice to feed them pot, but they said they were concerned about thc getting into the milk.
