Default CAN: Police suspect repairman caught in Surrey drug war

Police suspect repairman caught in Surrey drug war
The six dead men were shot in the head execution-style, source says
10-22-`07 | The Colonist | by Lora Grindlay

VANCOUVER -- An innocent repairman was among six people killed in a grisly multiple murder in Surrey.

A police source said a gas fireplace repairman was working on a leaky valve in the 15th floor penthouse suite in the 9800-block of East Whalley Ring Road when the murders occurred Friday.

The Vancouver Province is reporting today that the innocent man, who was called to the suite for the repair job, was shot in the head execution-style along with five others -- three Asian men and two Caucasian men.

Another source said the killings involved Lower Mainland gang members and the crack-cocaine trade.

Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team would not confirm or deny the information. He would only say that officers were working on locating and informing families of the dead men.

Carr would not say yesterday who the six murdered men were, nor would he say why or how they were killed.

The bodies of the six were removed late yesterday afternoon and police towed two cars from the building parking lot. Both vehicles -- a new, white Nissan Titan truck and a two-door compact Pontiac -- had their licence plates covered.

Carr would not say if the victims were known to police.

"We're still trying to shore up exactly who those individuals are. As you can imagine, there are at least six families out there that are going through a great deal of sorrow, and there's other families out there that are thinking that their family may be in there," he said.

He wouldn't say if the killings were part of a Lower Mainland drug war.

"We're open to all those possibilities. We're looking at every possible angle," he said.

Numerous police investigators arriving at the scene yesterday were members of the Abbotsford Police Department.

Abbotsford is home to the United Nations gang, which police have previously said has been dealing drugs and guns since 2002. It is made up of members from various ethnic backgrounds and was started by high-school friends from around the Fraser Valley.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is made up of members from various Lower Mainland police forces.

Carr said police will hold a news conference to identify the victims, perhaps today or tomorrow.

"From time to time, we can have difficulties notifying and locating next of kin. Our utmost most important role at this time is to find next of kin, have them notified, get them the help that they need -- and then move on to publicly stating who these individuals are and getting to the bottom of this," he said.

The entire 15th floor of the building is considered a crime scene, he said, and the investigation is lengthy.

"It's six individuals. It takes a great deal of time to sort that out with a single homicide. Just multiply everything that we're doing by six-- and it takes a great deal of time," he said.

Carr said people in the area should not be concerned following the deaths.

"We have a sense and we feel at this time that this is not a random act," he said. "That's as far as I can go with that."

He praised the local Mounties and the municipal government for working to reduce crime in the area -- a place long known for a brisk drug trade and the resulting crime.

"I believe it's a safe place," Carr said.
