Personally, I'm NOT in favor of outright legalization of every substance, and if it were to put on the ballot today, I'd likely vote against it. The marijuana legalization effort will face certain demise if people insist its an all or nothing issue
In my thinking the legalisation of anything takes the backseat. We need to be arguing drug policy, first. America, for example, has an administration in power that is against needle exchange programs. This is a measure which has been proven time and again to decrease rates of HIV and hepatitis infection and to increase the well-being of addicts. There is no sound reasoning against it. We spend millions of dollars effectively "forcing" people to kick their habits when we could just provide them pharmaceutical heroin for a fraction of the cost. This would remove the strain upon the individual to procure the drug and allow him to pursue a normal, working life. Not only that, but it would totally undermine the illegal market and all crime associated with it.

Back on topic, I still don`t think that we`re past the stage of "any publicity is good publicity" in the campaign for legalisation, and for that reason I appreciate Emery`s 'work', for the most part - though I wholeheartedly agree with sentiments expressed about his character.

Tomorrow night, the CBC will air The Prince of Pot: The U.S. vs. Marc Emery, a documentary that heightens the rhetoric of the debate to a matter of Canadian sovereignty.
Having watched the program in question, I found the use of the term 'rhetoric' to be somewhat misleading. Canada's sovereignty is very much at issue, not just because a Canadian is being charged and faces life for a "victimless crime" but because we

Have DEA offices within our borders for reasons no one can name

Are letting the US interfere with our government policies and law making.

So, far from rhetoric, as a Canadian I consider these to be very real and pressing issues.

Emery for sure comes of as goofy and egotistical, and I would go so far as to say he maybe has a messiah complex, but the DEA even wrote that he is responsible for a lot of the legalization movement's impetus through money. Emery is using his money to lobby, which according to most experts interviewed, is why he has been targeted.

The program itself was pretty honest. The guy likes to be naked a lot. He likes to get his body soaked in THC including, iirc, his genitalia. He thinks he's Jesus.

But he's still correct.

Now are smoke ins and 60's era protests the way to go? In Canada I'm not sure awareness and consensus is even the issue. Most Canadians are on side.

However the politicians are very good at dancing around the truth, except for Harper who just goes ahead and lies, and it's really all because of the US government.

So as I see it, the way forward is to make it a political football so attractive to the lawmakers they'll take a risk and let it get center stage. Don't ask me how. But associating it with annoying demonstrations is probably not the way. Why not run t.v. spots instead? Play up the numbers. Mention the deficit and debt. Make the debate mainstream. So long as you're not trafficking the DEA can't touch you.
Whatever' organization is behind that though, better be loaded and better be teflon.

Good or bad , mr. Emory is all in, and for that he gets my respect.
