Going to jail is an important part of the passive resistance approach to changing the world. It's not a matter of deserving or not deserving. Freedom fighters put themselves in front of unjust laws in order to point out the injustice.

Exactly

True enough, but he has commented many times on how he believes that the charges agaist him are far too harsh (though his lawyers must disagree due to the accecptence of the plea). He has even went so far as to promote the idea the US was seeking a life sentence, which was never even on the table at any time.

unknown- Gun control theory: Those who are willing to ignore the law and rights of others i.e. murder, robery, rape etc will obey a law which prohibits the possesion of a firearm.

Cool

Marc Emery is and has always been a front runner in the war of legalization. And although Marc made some bad choices with reguard to shipping to U.S. customers,Marc's work brought Marijuana legalization into the mainstream many years ago.

I agree what Marc did was like showing up to a gun fight with only a dull pocket knife.

Does it make him a bad person? I think not, if one of your kids did something that landed them in lock up...would you turn your back on them? Again I think not!

For the few of you that think of Marc as nothing but a fool, WELL SHAME ON YOU.....Marc is twice the man with twice the courage than anyone I've seen around these boards.

Did Ghandi really deserve to go to jail for making salt from sea water?

Did Mandela deserve to go to prison?

What amendment to the constitution gives the feds the right to determine whether or not a state has legal cannabis for medical or non medical reasons?
Well, I personally wouldn't mention Emery's name in the same sentence as any of those you have mentioned.

And the non-existent amendment doesn't really have anything to do with this discussion as it has morphed into now. There is what is right and there is the reality of the situation.

Plenty of folks have been fighting this fight for years trying to change the reality of the situation without managing to make their ego the defining characteristic as Emery has, imho.

I agree with this metaphor.

If one of my kids repeatedly broke the law, taunted law enforcement concerning it and dared them to do something about it...I would hope they would realize they brought their troubles onto themselves and be man enough to take the weight when they were inevitably caught. I wouldn't turn my back on them nor have I turned my back on Emery, but I don't consider him a messiah either. A lot of his problems he brought upon himself, and it has nothing to do with "the cause".

And that is your opinion and you are entitled to it.

I agree. He brought the problems on his self. I guess we could say that about a lot of the people that are busted for herb.

Does it have something to do with the "cause" ? I thought anything that put the herb in people's pockets was part of the "cause". Sure, he may have went about it the wrong way, but did he help?

I think yes........

I agree that he helped. See post #11. I also agree that anybody that gets busted for herb brought it on themselves. I also agree that nobody should be arrested for possessing herb.

You're not going to convince some people here that Marc Emery has done alot of good for the CANADIAN people when it comes to MJ. I think the problem they have with him is that there isn't an American counterpart in this country that fills the same shoes he fills. They want him to fail. It doesn't make any sense as this movement needs all the help it can get. Love him or hate him....at least stand by him as he fights the good fight instead of saying "Fuck him....I hope he rots in jail."

Thats bullshit. If that was the case, why hasn't the Dalai Lama gone back to Tibet? I'll tell you why...he's afraid of the Chinese.

That's the way it's worked since the concept of passive resistance was invented by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

His Holiness is both the spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people. What value would there be in his disappearing forever into some Chinese prison or oubliette? He hasn't gone back to Tibet because he's worth more to his people where he can communicate his message to the world and lead them from exile.

You are frightfully ignorant about His Holiness. It can be valuable to know whereof you speak.
