Default CAN: Marijuana is medicine, like it or not

Marijuana is medicine, like it or not
2-28-08|The Muse Online|By Alison Myrden: Letter to the Editor

Congratulations and good luck to MUN student Kristen Joy and her boyfriend, medical marijuana patient Mike Dawe, for bringing their dispute with the government to the public's attention (“Government policy keeps couple apart” The Muse, Vol. 58, Issue 18).

People seem to think it is OK to discriminate against a medical cannabis patient, as we must be the dregs of society for choosing cannabis at all according to a lot of people in our country.

This mindset has to change.

Those of us who have done our homework and have chosen this medicine find we require far fewer pharmaceutical medications when we consume natural plants. Articulate, knowledgeable, and informed people all around the world make this choice daily.

Finally, what I would like to point out is that cannabis patients like Mr. Dawe and myself are here to stay, and deserve the same rights that you have whether you like it or not. We are given a mere pittance in the way of money, as the goal is to keep people away from the social services system. Trust me, we would much rather be a working member of our community than a person at home in pain on such a pathetic, yet much required, stipend.

We are already a part of the largest group of marginalized people in the country due to our income, our choice of medicine, and our health issues – why knock us down and ostracize us even more?

Please, for the sake of our children, get educated.

I agree with this 100% I myself am a medical user for a back disease and I will continue to use marijuana even if federally legal medicinal mj never happens. I am just a normal guy in my community, but as soon as I mention that I'm a medical user I turn into a "no good pothead." I'm sick of this discrimination because I choose to medicate with natural medicines instead of synthetics, which also come with plenty of adverse side effects.

Exactly, people don't understand that marijuana is a natural medicine. They automatically classify it as a "gateway drug" and a "hard drug". But in reality, it's safer than alcohol, tobacco and every over-the-counter-drug, and those are all legal. Sure, some people go on to do bigger and badder drugs, but that's only the people who like to get high and want to get to a whole different and bigger high, not the people who use it for medical reasons. It's people like that that give cannabis a bad name and causes everyone to look at us like twackers and to judge the substance in a bad way before they even know all the facts.
People have been using cannabis as a medication for centuries, all across the globe and there has never been a recorded case of death or even an overdose. So why's it illegal? I'll let you decide that one.

I love this thread. I want to take it beyond "medicine" and call it therapy. I feel that marijuana, from a medical standpoint, can provide therapy for physical and mental ailments. This means that it should be legally available to all who believe that it may benefit them, and it could legitimately benefit millions of people. I hope someone figures this out, very soon.

I use marijuana for my depression. I used to take medication but it made me worse, and I was pretty bad to begin with. Then I started smoking marijuana and I've been fine ever since.
